Senior Clerk Typist (SR-10)

Position Information

There are multiple temporary and permanent Senior Clerk Typist vacancies in various departments within the City and County of Honolulu.  The eligible list that will be established from this recruitment will be used City-wide to fill current and future temporary and permanent Senior Clerk Typist positions, as well as other related positions, in various City departments located throughout the City and County of Honolulu.  Referrals of qualified applicants will be based upon employment availability, date of receipt of the application, applicant's department preference, or a combination of these and other factors.  

Candidates recommended for hire are subject to a background check, including a validation of references from prior employment, a review of dismissals from employment, separations from military service under other than honorable conditions, and a criminal history records check. Certain positions may require a more comprehensive check, including use of the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification (IAFIS) database and State records, as applicable.

General Description of Duties:
Types and performs a variety of difficult clerical or routine administrative work in preparing, checking, reviewing, evaluating, and refining forms, records, and similar materials; prepares reports and maintains continuing records; may supervise others; and performs other related duties as required.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following: typing letters, reports, forms, and other materials into final form from rough or corrected copy; typing tabular and other materials from rough or copy where format and arrangement of data are not clearly indicated; checking and proofreading typewritten materials; preparing, checking, and reviewing forms, records, reports, applications, and other documents for accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to established departmental and/or legal requirements; evaluating documents and processing same according to individual circumstances where the correct course of action is not clearly defined; determining eligibility for and issuing licenses and permits; summarizing materials and preparing special reports involving interpretation and analysis of data and judgment as to format and details of presentation; composing routine correspondence and letters; setting up and maintaining files and revising system as necessary; giving information and resolving complaints over a counter or telephone involving interpretation and explanation of rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and knowledge of the agency's purposes and functions; answering telephone and taking or relaying messages and calls; making appointments for the staff; greeting callers and directing them to proper persons or offices; and supervising and reviewing the work of others.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience that demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
  • Three years of clerical experience and the ability to type 40 or more net words per minute.
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (Type 3/automobile), as required.
  • Substitution: Business school or college level credits from an accredited four-year college or university will substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis for up to two years of the required three years of clerical experience.
  • Typing proficiency of 40 or more net wpm: This class of work requires you to type at 40 or more net words per minute. Your proficiency may be evaluated by the appointing authority as part of the selection/interview process or during your probationary period. Failure to meet the proficiency requirement may result in testing by the Department of Human Resources, removal from the eligible list, or termination from appointment.
