The Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana is a non-profit organization dedicated to perpetuating and teaching the skills, knowledge, and practices of our kupuna through the interpretation, restoration, care and protection of the natural and cultural resources within the Hā‘ena State Park (our mission statement).  We do this through malama ‘āina activities in Hā‘ena State Park and the near shore fishery of Hā‘ena.

This part-time position reports to the President of the Board of Directors of the Hui, and will oversee and manage all aspects of operations of the Hui while working closely with the Hui Board of Directors and the ‘Ohana Council.

Minimum Qualifications Include:

Bachelors degree in Hawaiian Studies, Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, Botany, Ethnobotany, Fishery Management, Nonprofit Management, or 10 years of experience in nonprofit management.  Experience in nonprofit management and governance, tropical horticulture or agriculture, knowledge of Hawaiian culture, are all valued assets that will be considered in selecting the ideal candidate.

Experience working with Hawaiian cultural practitioners, and a familiarity with the Hawaiian language is essential. Excellent written and oral communication skills, managerial experience, computer competence, and successful grant writing are required. The successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to collaboratively work with a multicultural community, Hawaiian cultural experts, and a multidisciplinary team of scientists, educators, and conservationists. Must also be highly motivated, well organized, and a team player.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Organize, oversee and manage Hui staff, volunteers and interns.
  2. Work with Hui President to coordinate regular Hui BOD meeting and OC meeting as stated in the Hui Bylaws and communicate information about these meetings to the Hui members.
  3. Ensure that good and regular communication between the ED, BOD and OC exists and effectively shares meeting minutes and information about Hui meetings and organizational matters.
  4. Ensure that Hui MoM is operated in a fiscally responsible manner.
  5. Develop and manage the annual budget process and reporting following best practices for NPO accounting. 
  6. Ensure compliance with State and Federal policies and guidelines related to nonprofit organizations.
  7. Develop a five-year operational plan to grow the Hui’s base of support, financial revenue, ohana participation, and potential management of HSP. 
  8. Write and submit grant proposals and implement other fundraising strategies to ensure the resources needed to implement the five-year operational plan. 
  9. Review, update and implement the Hui’s Organizational Vision and Strategic Plan. 
  10. Work closely with Division of State Parks to ensure compliance with the Hui’s Curatorship Agreement.
  11. Develop a culture of safety for all Hui workdays.
  12. Work with the Hui’s Program Director to develop, fund, and implement site-focused mālama-‘āina and mālama-kai based programs that fulfill the Hui’s mission.
  13. Foster, nurture and continue the vision of HSP as a living cultural site and oversee the procedures that have been established for the appropriate access and use of this area by the Hui and the larger community.
  14. Develop and maintain a good working relationship with DLNR, Limahuli Garden & Preserve, and the larger community in Hā’ena.
