MEDICAL-LEGAL PARTNERSHIP ADVOCATE – ID# 225734.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the William S. Richardson School of Law, Medical-Legal Partnership Hawai‘i (MLP), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,800 - $7,500/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Provides client-centered legal advocacy for low-income patients of the partnering health centers.  Develops and conducts community education programs.  Develops and conducts professional trainings to increase knowledge of the social determinants of health.  Engages in community and policy activities to address local housing, public benefits, and poverty-related matters and to promote community  leadership.  Trains and oversees MLP students and volunteers, as needed. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

Doctor of Law (Juris Doctor) Degree from an accredited college or university with focused course of study in Medical-Legal Partnership, interdisciplinary collaborations, or social justice/community law.  Attorney licensed to practice in Hawai‘i.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years experience providing legal advocacy to low-income, immigrant, or vulnerable communities in Hawai‘i or similarly situated populations.  Experience with immigrant and LEP (Limited English Proficient) populations, minority communities, or low-income populations.  Experience in addressing policy issues, including housing (public and private), homelessness, public benefits, family law, and/or civil rights.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of legal systems in Hawai‘i.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to speak and write clearly, including managing client cases.  Ability to analyze and draft documents, case write-ups, research, and other related matters with minimal supervision.  Must demonstrate excellent public speaking and presentation skills.  Must have strong client counseling, community education, and community engagement and empowerment skills.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative, multidisciplinary program, including working with and meaningfully engaging diverse communities.  Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or equivalent). Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

Expertise and experience in legal practice areas of housing law (including public housing), public benefits (state and federal), family law, civil rights, consumer protection, and/or other poverty-related legal needs.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators and staff across various systems and disciplines, including University, state, federal, healthcare, social service providers and funders.   Ability and interest in non-legal writing, including editorials and storytelling related to our work.
