EMWP NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGING COORDINATOR – ID# 225372.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP), located in Makawao, Maui, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,497.35 - $5,973/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Serves as the EMWP Natural Resource Managing Coordinator for the EMWP.  Develops and recommends resource management initiatives to EMWP project manager/coordinator and Partners for implementation.  Programs include but are not limited to weed abatement, feral animal control, fence construction and landscape monitoring.  Directly supervises Field Supervisor(s) who implement monitoring and management objectives and supervise project Crew Leaders and Field Technicians.  Directly obtains and compiles data collected by EMWP project staff and partners on invasive species locations (plant and animal), current and proposed fence lines, and transect monitoring into databases and/or Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms. Directly develops and oversees implementation of alien plant control methods that include helicopter application of herbicide to control invasive species. Drives to project sites. Identifies and procures materials and equipment needed to implement resource management program. Assists staff implement resource management programs.  Participates in public relations initiatives, and attends meetings as a representative of the EMWP with project partners and members of the community.  Must adhere to protocols regarding equipment use, pesticide use, and invasive species prevention. Develops new standard operating procedures to enhance project safety and efficiency. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

Master`s Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Natural Science, or related field (Bachelor`s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological or Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Wildfire Science or related field and an additional two (2) years of related work experience may substitute for a Master`s Degree).

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in a natural resource management project.  Experience needs to be well documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field and can include internships.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge in implementing a natural resource management program in Hawai‘i, native Hawaiian flora and fauna, and threats from alien species.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to implement a natural resource management program, manage multiple projects, work under pressure with flexibility. Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.  Ability to develop timeframes with proven organizational skills.   Ability to operate power tools. Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to disseminate and comprehend complex verbal and written instructions.  Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must complete helicopter manager courses within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to camp in remote rainforest locations for up to five (5) consecutive days, one (1) time a month in inclement weather.   Ability to hike up to twelve (12) miles on irregular terrain while carrying backpacks weighing up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.  Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights).

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.   Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

Previous natural resource management experience developing and implementing resource management programs with an emphasis on feral animal and alien plant control with a land management agency.  Familiarity with computers, data entry and use of herbicides to control weedy vegetation in a forest environment.  Knowledge of working in and around helicopters.
