LASER RANGING SAFETY TECHNICIAN – ID# 225297.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i, Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Pukalani, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,012 - $4,400/Mon.
DUTIES: Provides aircraft watch on the summit of Haleakala during laser tracking missions by visually scanning the sky and alerting the console operator via radio of any possible illumination by the laser of passing aircrafts. Ensures area around calibration targets and laser observatory is clear of any obstruction or personnel. Controls laser transmission equipment during operations via a fire/no-fire control box. Operates and monitors virtual radar hardware, software, and associated network. Must use good judgment to determine conditions for laser fire. Troubleshoots minor network and hardware problems. Responsible for maintaining and updating the software and hardware in use. On the job training will be provided. Employee must be able to work evenings, weekends and holiday shifts. Employee must be able to work ten-hour (10) work shifts.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience in computer repair & networking, astronomy, or a related technical field.
KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of computer hardware and software. Basic knowledge of networked devices and communication protocols.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Demonstrated ability in establishing working relationships within a team or crew. Ability to exercise good judgement related to laser fire use. Must be able to communicate in English proficiently to interact with project staff and funding agency representatives. Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and abide by policies. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work well independently, maintain awareness, and be attentive and alert at all times under solitary conditions. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 10,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. Must be able to pass a post offer vision examination (certification of 20/20 vision (corrected) in both eyes with normal night vision).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience related to the understanding and implementation of satellite laser ranging. Work experience in a research environment. Certifications in computer IT security or hardware.
