Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Visitor Information Station (VIS), Maunakea Shared Services, located at Halepōhaku, on the island of Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,450 - $3,640/Mon.
DUTIES: Performs a variety of services at the Visitor Information Station (VIS), including advising the public on how to safely visit Maunakea. Helps direct traffic and ensures the orderly and safe parking of visitor cars in the evening. Answers general and safety related questions about Maunakea to the public. Assists with outreach events at the VIS. Maintains bookstore shelf stocks at First Light Bookstore and answers questions about products. Handles credit card/cash sales as per instructions from the bookstore lead. Helps daily to maintain cleanliness at the VIS. Cleans restrooms, VIS interior, First Light Bookstore (FLBS) warehouse and areas outside the VIS as per instructions from the VIS Lead and VIS Supervisor. Updates cleaning logs to ensure daily tasks are complete. Drives to VIS from Hilo and occasionally to the summit. Assists with VIS outreach events. When operational, presents the daytime solar program. Explains the operation of the telescopes and related observational instruments. Assists staff in presenting the evening stargazing program.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
At least six (6) months of customer service experience obtained through retail work or guest services in a hotel or the food service industry.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of cultural, astronomical, geological, archaeological, natural history, and/or environmental features of Maunakea. Knowledge of how visitors can safely visit Maunakea. Knowledge of janitorial processes, chemical safety and minor repairs of equipment. Knowledge of inventory monitoring processes. Understands the safe and appropriate use of standard cleaning chemicals, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, blood-borne pathogen protection, and Material Safety sheets.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to use email, Internet, and standard office computer applications. Ability to communicate interpretive and safety information to the public in an informative, interesting and respectful manner. Ability to perform minor maintenance repairs on janitorial equipment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external audiences. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission on unpaved roads and ice or snow-covered pavement. Must possess a clean driving abstract, and be able to follow the MKSS Driving Safety Policy. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to pass blood-borne pathogen knowledge test within three (3) months from date of hire.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Primary work site is located 9,300 feet above sea level with wide temperature variations. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high altitude medical examination on an ongoing basis. Must obtain a medical doctor`s approval for work at high altitudes.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Firsthand experience with Maunakea and its astronomical, cultural, and natural resources. Experience operating astronomical telescopes or astronomical imaging devices. Experience performing data entry and using office technology. Demonstrated professional interpersonal skills in the hotel industry. Experience functioning at high altitudes. Experience in sales and inventory management.
