TMA FIELD PROJECT ASSISTANT I – ID# 225635.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), based in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, located on the Island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,525/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Builds, inspects, and maintains fences. Monitors and controls alien plants, and assists with feral animal control in the Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) Management Area. Conducts surveys along transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution. Collects field data. In the field, regularly participates in alien plant control, feral animal control, fence building, restoration planting, and other resource management work. Drives project vehicles to work sites and works in and around helicopters. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee`s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Up to one (0-1) year of experience working in natural resources management.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from non-native species, including invasive plants and feral ungulates. Basic knowledge of field-related work conditions and safety precautions related to field work. Basic knowledge of navigating digital software or applications. Basic knowledge of sound data recording practices, including notetaking, for documentation or tracking purposes. 

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to navigate using a compass and map. Ability to apply herbicides. Ability to work independently. Ability to inspect and repair fences. Ability to use a computer to record technical field data. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete ATV/UTV training within twelve (12) months. Must complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation or over lava substrate under difficult conditions (heat, rain, cold temperatures, poor footing). Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days. Must be able to fly by helicopter to remote locations and hike for remote fence building  or survey work. Able to backpack, lift, and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

College coursework from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, wildlife management, botany, or related field. Paid or unpaid experience with invasive plant or feral animal control, fence building or construction, and computer data entry.
