Tree Milling & Processing Manager

Description:

Oversee and manage all aspects of the Tree Milling & Processing Yard, including personnel, material management, logistics, task sequence, and safety; ensuring project goals are achieved; and providing leadership and supervision for the team in order to achieve a safe, healthy, productive, cohesive, and positive workplace. This is a full-time position, 35-40 hours per week.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, Work location at Redistribution Center and Kalaeloa Yard

Compensation

  • Position pays $21.50 per hour to start

Position Responsibilities

  • Utilize Lucas Mill Dedicated Slabber DSM23 and chainsaw to cut salvaged tree logs into slabs 
  • De-nail salvaged lumber. 
  • Use proper stacking and drying techniques to prevent damage to milled slabs. 
  • Ensure proper documentation and inventory of milled slabs and processed lumber. 
  • Work with salvaged tree logs and prepare them for reuse by learning the proper techniques for milling, stacking, and drying 
  • Develop our Tree Reclamation Program. 
  • Facilitate and coordinate transport of milled slabs and processed lumber to Redistribution Center. 
  • Maintain a clean and organized yard 
  • Maintain tools and equipment, including sharpening saw blades 
  • Manage and direct crew members 
  • Research, set up, and ongoing management of solar kiln. 
  • Delegate tasks to crew members and keep crew motivated and on task 
  • Outreach to arborists, landscapers, and City & County/State departments for tree donations. 
  • Work in collaboration with Redistribution staff. 
  • Ensure all duties of material processing department are being done when not milling or performing outreach. 
  • Participate in the recruitment of crew members and manage training for all new hires.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver`s license and clean driving abstract. 
  • Some construction background and experience a plus, but will train on use of chainsaw and mill 
  • Experience using hand and power tools 
  • Ability to work in all outdoor elements and conditions 
  • Attention to detail and safety and excellent communication skills 
  • Commitment to reducing waste and providing the community with an affordable building material resource 
  • Ability to work as a collaborative team member 
  • Enjoy physically demanding work, including but not limited to, the ability to perform repetitive tasks and conduct repeated movement like bending, standing, walking, prying, stooping, carrying, and other related tasks. 
  • Ability to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, steel toed and soled boots, gloves, ear protection, and respirator when required

Physical requirements

  • Position requires manipulating 60+lbs throughout the work day by utilizing tools and proper equipment. 
  • Ability to perform intense and repetitive physical work including bending, lifting & moving material, standing, walking.

General Requirements

  • Cell phone and email communication. 
  • 3 good professional references (no friends or family). 
  • Ability to learn to operate a forklift. 
  • Non-profit experience is a plus
