Police Commission Support Clerk

The Honolulu Police Commission is hiring for a Police Commission Support Clerk. This position is located in Honolulu, within the office of the Honolulu Police Commission, and is under the direct supervision of the Commission's Executive Officer.

What You Will Do:

  • Processes and register walk-in complaints, ensuring information is accurately documented and prepared for review.
  • Provides notary services to support the processing and documentation of complaints.
  • Provides extensive transcription services for complainants, the Executive Officer and staff investigators under limited time constraints.
  • Assist staff investigators with preparing and formatting completed case files and assembling enclosures for final signatures.
  • Conducts research for public requests for records and other agency requests, pursuant to Hawaii Revised Statutes 92F "sunshine law".

Special Working Conditions:

  • Deal with complainants who may have broken the law and may be angry, upset, or hostile.
  • Must maintain emotional control and professionalism in stressful situations and interact with individuals with varying physical, mental, or medical conditions.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or other irregular hours, often with limited advance notice, to meet unforeseen requirements or deadlines.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Three (3) years of clerical experience, one of which shall have involved reviewing and processing of police reports. Applicable Skills:

  • Knowledge of filing methods and systems.
  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling and word usage.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and legal forms common to police functions.
  • Ability to transcribe from recordings and notes accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to type at the rate of 50 net words per minute.
  • Ability to provide general information and/or direct inquiries to the appropriate personnel and/or division.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with departmental officials, employees and the public.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid State of Hawaii notary public's commission, prior to the completion of probation. NOTE: The above licenses/certificates must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis hereafter as a condition of employment.
