Research Assistant

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Work Schedule: 10 hours/week

Type: Temporary (casual), Not to Exceed 08/31/2026

Funding: Funded by the Hawaii Community Development Authority

Other Conditions: To begin as soon as 08/01/2026, for up to 08/31/2026, but may end sooner, dependent on availability of funding and program need. Must be available to work 10 hours a week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop data gathering and management plan.
  2. Attend public workshops/meeting, take observational notes, set up audio/visual equipment.
  3. Gather, organize, store, and manage all project data.
  4. Create and maintain a project bibliographic database.
  5. Track recruitment chains and manage survey data records.
  6. Review and summarize literature related to public participation for community development planning processes.
  7. Transcribe/support the transcription of workshop recordings.
  8. Analyze, summarize public meeting data and analytical findings.
  9. Draft research memos and reports.
  10. Other duties as necessary and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Communications, Communicology, or related field.
  2. Demonstrated ability to conduct survey research and manage participant recruitment in community-based settings.
  3. Working knowledge of Qualtrics or similar survey platforms, and basic data management and analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SPSS).

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with public participation techniques and practices, and experience analyzing policy documents, recorded testimony, and/or audio/visual data.
  2. Proficiency to review and interpret research data across multiple formats, communicate effectively, and complete tasks independently and on time.
