Graduate Research Assistant

The Hawai'i State Center for Nursing invites PhD in Nursing Candidates to apply for a temporary, 50% effort, 11-month Graduate Assistant position beginning in August 2026. Continuation is contingent upon program needs, satisfactory work performance, academic progress, and availability of funds. Position benefits include tuition waiver and eligibility for health benefits, such as medical, drug, dental, and vision, with employee contribution.

The position is restricted for a PhD student (Nursing) who is interested in advancing nursing recruitment and retention strategies. Candidates should enjoy learning new technologies, solving problems, and working on teams. Candidates will be expected to engage with multi-disciplinary teams across the state using virtual technology, plus working in in-person settings. The candidate will provide assistance to the Principal Investigator (PI), the Director of the Hawaii State Center of Nursing, in conducting program evaluation and supporting programs and initiatives. Manages project data and ensure integrity and quality of data collected. Attends weekly project meetings and assist with communication with other program administrators, vendors, and community members who are key stakeholders for the assigned projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Works closely with the Hawaii State Center for Nursing staff to support ongoing policy initiatives, and day-to-day program operations.
2. Maintains communications with internal/external project partners and assists with any necessary paperwork. Assists in carrying out routine awareness-raising events to ensure ongoing project funding. Reviews and summarizes relevant research literature to guide project activities.
3. Actively participates in team meetings to share insights and best practices from active projects.
4. Performs project administration support activities such as manage, coordinate & administer the implementation of the Nurse Transition to Practice Support grant supported initiatives, which includes but is not limited to the Hawai'i Nurse Residency Program (NRP).
5. Works with Nurse Transition to Practice Support staff to collect program data and complete data entry required for analysis, reporting, and program management purposes.
6. Develops recurring reports on program outcomes for grant expectations.
7. Provides user support to partners on the operation of system and tools.
8. Organizes and maintains documents, files and folders.
9. Assists in planning and recording meetings with staff, faculty, administrators, internal and external stakeholders.
10. Completes various projects as assigned.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Classified degree-seeking graduate student in a PhD in Nursing program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, in good academic standing and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above;
2. Must maintain 6 credits per semester except those who have reached 800 (dissertation);
3. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
4. Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
5. Demonstrated problem-solving, communication, and adaptability skills;
6. Familiarity with modern communication tools and technology and ability to assist others in using them;
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom and ability to manage multiple projects are essential.

Desirable Qualifications

• Interest in coalition work, workforce development, and advocacy to advance nursing workforce issues.
• Experience in program evaluation
• Experience in data analytics
• Familiarity with: 1) Word processing programs, 2) AI tools, #) graphic design tools such as Canva, or similar programs
• Familiarity with ethical guidelines for research and policy.
