Building Maintenance Worker I, BC-09: $5,856.00 per month

Examples of Duties:

  1. Checks buildings, equipment and grounds to locate conditions indicating the need for repair and maintenance work.
  2. Makes building repairs including patching roof leaks, replacing mineral surface roofing paper, wooden and asbestos shingles.
  3. Cuts and replaces door and window panes.
  4. Adjusts and rehangs doors.
  5. Repairs and replaces screens, door locks, bumpers, bathroom accessories, toilet hinges and seats.
  6. Replaces and patches cement floors, asphalt tiles, linoleum floor coverings, foundations, concrete and asphaltic concrete walks and drives.
  7. Performs woodwork such as removing and replacing shelves, cabinets, sink tops, partitions, steps, porches, termite infested and rotted boards, and repairs furniture.
  8. Builds forms for concrete and repairs fences and gates.
  9. Replaces electrical fixtures, fuses, drop cords, switches.
  10. Installs new electrical outlets, locates and repairs shorts in electrical circuit.
  11. Replaces broken pipes, gaskets, packings, washers, hose bibbs, faucets and closet tank fixtures.
  12. Installs wash basins, closet tank and bowls.
  13. Unclogs drains and sewers.
  14. Sands, paints and varnishes doors, walls, window sashes, screen frames, furniture and new construction.
  15. Mixes mortar and builds walls.
  16. Sweats copper pipe joints and fittings, and uses both oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment to cut and weld pipes and angle braces.
  17. Services, lubricates, and regulates such equipment as water heaters, ventilating and air-conditioning units, electrical water coolers, pumps and electric motors.
  18. May perform minor repairs and service motor vehicles.
  19. Estimates cost, time and materials needed for repair and maintenance work to be performed.
  20. May perform purchase, storage and inventory of materials, supplies and tools.
  21. Reports need for major repairs.
  22. Uses a variety of hand tools and some power equipment in the performance of work.
  23. Operates a vehicle in the transportation of materials.
  24. Cleans, sharpens and services tools and equipment used in the work.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training: Four (4) years of work experience in performing a variety of building maintenance repair work or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Knowledge of: Basic practices and methods in the repair of buildings, including safety procedures; common tools, equipment and materials used in the carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical trades; electro-mechanical appliances used in homes and other buildings. Ability to: Determine need for repairs involving a variety of building trades; recognize hazards typical of the work; use hand tools utilized in a variety of building trades; read blueprints and sketches; estimate time and material needed to perform a job; make mechanical repairs to equipment and appliances; understand and follow oral and written instructions. Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a current, valid driver's license. Lift and Carry Requirement: Applicants must possess the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted and lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Supplemental Information

Salary: The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable. Requirements: Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Temporary Assignment: Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below: A copy of the applicant's TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report; A signed letter from the applicant's supervisor that includes the applicant's name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked; or, Copies of the applicant's signed SF-10 Forms. Payday: New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
