Lifeguard I ($16.50 Hourly)

The Lifeguard I is responsible for the health and safety of guests in attendance at the Kroc Center Hawaii aquatics facility. They ensure a safe and orderly swimming environment, carry out rescues as required, administer first aid, and assist with the day-to-day operations of the pool to ensure a clean and enjoyable facility for members and guests.

The Kroc Center Hawaii Lifeguard I will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

Requirements include American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. A child labor certificate or "work permit" is required for working minors until they reach 18 years of age. Any equivalent combination of training and/or education in lieu of work experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.

Preferences include swim lesson instruction and previous customer service work experience.

Essential functions include providing all life-guarding services, responding to emergency situations, maintaining swimming and rescue skills, assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of the pool area, cautioning swimmers regarding unsafe practices, following emergency action plans, observing and reporting safety issues, communicating with supervisors and co-workers, assisting in determining chlorine content and pH value of water, assuming a schedule of flexible working hours, practicing safe work habits, following The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures, maintaining the Code of Ethics policy, and performing other assignments/duties as directed.

The position requires strong organizational skills, ability to multitask, and detail-oriented. The work will be in a fast-paced environment and must maintain poise under pressure. The position must maintain a self-motivated and self-directed schedule able to take projects from beginning through completion and respond to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner. This position must possess the self-discipline necessary to perform repetitive tasks without lowering quality of work, exercise good judgment and be comfortable taking initiative with projects. This position must be able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals.

The candidate chosen for this position is frequently required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; uses hand to finger, handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment. The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds and occasionally more than 25 pounds with assistance.

The position requires talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The position also requires the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations. Attendance at trainings and conferences in Hawaii may be required.

Equipment needs include rescue hooks, rescue tubes, ring buoys, spine boards, c-collars, and respirator. Chemical feeders, chemicals, pool vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, pool filters and other pool maintenance equipment.

Certificates and licenses include American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate and American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a criminal history information check. Conviction of a crime will not automatically preclude employment. The circumstances involved in the conviction(s) will be considered.
