Merchandising Analyst

The Merchandising Analyst is responsible for analyzing sales, inventory, and customer data to optimize product placement, pricing, and stock levels, helping to increase profits and sales by making data-driven recommendations on what products to sell, where to put them, and how to display them to attract shoppers. Using data analysis and merchandising strategy, work with Category Manager to enhance the customer experience, improve store layout, and meet business goals, requiring strong analytical, communication, and software skills. This role blends data-driven decision making with local market insight to deliver superior in-store performance and a consistently premium experience. The Merchandising Analyst serves as the bridge between strategy and execution.
The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, with a strong understanding of convenience retail merchandising and a passion for elevating the customer shopping experience through visual and tactical consistency.
Essential Functions
- Execute and maintain planograms, assortment strategies, promotional placement, and space optimization in COCO stores based on direction from the Category Manager.
- Ensure strong execution of seasonal, promotional, and new-item initiatives across all locations
- Make sure promotional signage, product placement, pricing, and displays are correctly implemented and aligned with company guidelines.
- Conduct regular store walks and merchandising audits to ensure compliance and consistency across locations.

- Rotate and front merchandise to maximize shelf visibility and product sell-through.
- Address execution gaps or obstacles in coordination with store teams and report concerns promptly to the Category Manager.
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations and the Operations team to ensure all parties are aligned on merchandising activities and that they are consistent with station-level policies and procedures.
Data Analysis & Performance Management
- Analyze sales, margin, velocity, inventory, and promotional performance to identify trends and opportunities
- Make data-backed recommendations on assortment changes, space allocation, pricing, and promotions
- Track KPIs and category performance, proactively addressing underperforming items or stores
- Use insights to test, learn, and refine merchandising approaches over time
Signage, Equipment & Fixture Coordination
- Ensure all marketing and product signage, point-of-purchase materials, and displays are installed correctly and maintained in good condition.
- Monitor stores for missing, outdated, or damaged signage and coordinate timely replacements.
- Assist in sourcing and managing merchandising equipment (e.g., shelving, coolers, coffee dispensers) and support its setup, repair and replacement in collaboration with vendors and store operations.
- Support seasonal or promotional fixture transitions commonly found in retail environments to enhance visual impact.
Inventory, Stock Rotation & Presentation Standards
- Monitor inventory levels of promoted and fast-moving products during field visits to ensure products are well-stocked and visually appealing.
- Identify out-of-stock or overstock situations and work with store teams to adjust display strategies accordingly.
- Recommend layout adjustments based on customer flow and visual effectiveness.
Administrative & Reporting Duties
- Document execution status with field notes, photos, and reporting tools; escalate any execution challenges or issues.
- Maintain promotional and planogram execution calendars and coordinate timing with store operations.
- Track key performance indicators related to display execution, compliance, and promotional effectiveness.
- Utilize basic reporting tools or mobile apps to track compliance and submit updates in a timely manner.
Other Duties
- Champions safety, reliability and incident and injury free operations. Maintains commitment to a high standard of safety, complies with all safety laws and IES safety policies/rules, and reports actual and potential safety violations to appropriate management personnel. Reports any unsafe or hazardous condition and initiates corrective action.
- Collaborates with other Operations team members, Business Consultants and Business Development staff to ensure business results are delivered on time, within budget and with a high degree of quality. Works effectively with coworkers and others by sharing ideas in a constructive, positive manner, listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others, keeping commitments, keeping others informed of work progress and issues, addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions, and respecting the diversity of the IES workforce in actions, words, and deeds.
- Drives a high degree of excellence by proactive initiative to update and maintain operating standards, emergency procedures and any other documents as needed.
- Lead or contribute to special assignments as directed by the Category Manager or DBAM.
- Perform additional retail merchandising tasks as needed during peak seasons, promotional events, or major resets.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Bachelor or Associate degree in business or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
- 2+ years of experience years in retail merchandising, preferably in convenience stores, grocery, or consumer packaged goods environments
Skills
- 5+ years of merchandising or category management experience in convenience retail, grocery, specialty retail, or multi-unit environments
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make independent recommendations
- Proven ability to manage multiple categories, stores, or initiatives simultaneously
- Experience working with POS data, sales reports, margins, and inventory metrics
- Strong judgment, ownership mindset, and comfort making decisions without heavy oversight
- Excellent communication, time management, organizational, and collaboration skills
- Strong understanding of visual merchandising principles, product placement strategies, and customer behavior in a retail setting.
- Ability to travel frequently to multiple store locations across Oahu and the Neighbor Islands and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in using mobile tools and technology for reporting, communication, and documentation.
- Physically able to lift and move product displays, signage, and light equipment as needed (up to 40 lbs).
- Success working with vendors and handling retail execution across a multi-location footprint.
- Hands-on experience with merchandising tools and planograms, preferably in the Convenience Retail vertical.
- Proficient at Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of PDI or similar tools a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of retail operations, convenience store dynamics, merchandising, and marketing
- Experience in fuel + convenience retail, foodservice-adjacent retail, or premium retail concepts
Pay and Benefits
Island Energy Services offers a competitive salary that commensurate with qualifications and experience. The hiring salary range for this position is $67,000 - $84,000. IES also offers a generous benefits package to include comprehensive health and welfare benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401k plus employer matching, supplemental voluntary insurance options, etc.
