The Facilities Planning Department of the Facilities & Security Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has one management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

Job Function:

Plans, budgets, implements and manages the general plant and facilities, furniture, fixtures and renovation and new construction for office space for HEI, HECO and its subsidiaries. Manages multiple complex projects utilizing cross-functional teams to deliver the right product at the right quality within the required timeframe and right price. Provides team leadership and is responsible for conceptualization/inception through budgeting, design, approval, procurement, construction, placement in operation and project closing. Assures operational/functional, legal, internal audit, financial, regulatory, safety and all other requirements are met.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, manages and coordinates the planning, budgeting, scheduling, design, approval, procurement, construction, placement in operation and closing of projects. Provides project leadership, work direction and secures commitment from project team members in meeting project milestones. Ensures team members have all resources, information and direction necessary to successfully perform their jobs. Evaluates progress and performance of project team members and implements actions necessary to accomplish project objectives including recognition, redirection, recruitment and replacement of team members.
  • Develops necessary strategies required to meet project goals. Makes early identification of potential problem areas. Solves problems to ensure attainment of project goals. Redirects design, purchasing, permits/approvals or construction to prevent or minimize constraints or actions which may delay schedule or add costs to projects. Conducts inspections of construction sites as necessary.
  • Develops project justifications, cost estimates, economic analyses, and schedules. Prepares and presents project progress and cost reports internally and externally as required.
  • Develops and maintains a computerized facilities drawing and inventory system utilizing Facilities Management Applications.
  • Reviews, recommends and processes vendor, consultant, contractor, and equipment contracts and/or purchase orders.
  • Works with Regulatory Affairs, Budgets & Financial Analysis, Corporate Accounting, Community Relations, Legal and others in obtaining approvals. Obtains Company authorizations for expenditures for funds for engineering, materials and construction.
  • Serves as the focal point for all project related matters. As needed, works with and through community groups, neighborhood boards, government agencies, other utilities and private companies, and the PUC to disseminate information, address concerns, obtain permits and approvals, and resolve project-related problems. Prepares and provides testimonies and presentations at internal strategic meetings, public meetings and regulatory hearings as necessary.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Basic Qualifications:

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of facilities planning and management acquired through college-level training or equivalent experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from a nationally recognized organization such as the Project Management Institute (PMI), highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and computer aided design systems with software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing and facilities management programs.

Skills Requirements:

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
  • Leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.
  • In-depth analytical, computational, organizational and time management skills to handle various projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as member of a team.

Experience Requirements:

  • Several years (3-5) of project management experience in project planning, design and installation of facilities.
