Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents may receive up to $20,000 in incentives, with the opportunity for up to $40,000 in retention incentives over the first four years. Relocation may be required depending on operational needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
  2. Prevent and apprehend undocumented individuals and smugglers.
  3. Conduct various checks including farm, building, and traffic patrols.
  4. Patrol international boundaries using government assets.

Qualifications:

To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, candidates must possess:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A combination of work experience and education.

For the GL-7 grade level, candidates must have:

  • One year of specialized work experience in a law enforcement capacity.
  • A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education related to law enforcement.

Additionally, candidates must be U.S. citizens, have residency for at least three of the last five years, and be under 40 years old at the time of selection unless previous law enforcement experience applies. Formal training will be conducted at the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, which includes intensive instruction in law enforcement techniques, physical training, and firearms.
