Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant

Primary Purpose:

The person in this position is a member of the Patient Centered Medical Home team. Each team member plays an integral role in providing patient-centered health care. The incumbent is responsible in performing venipuncture duties and coordinating laboratory supplies and activities to ensure quality and efficiency. S/he implements and monitors quality improvement/assurance activities as needed in the laboratory.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform venipuncture on patients of all ages.
  • Collect/prepare non-blood specimens.
  • Ensure proper specimen processing, labeling, and test ordering.
  • Monitor and take inventory of laboratory supplies.
  • Organize and keep the laboratory clean at all times.
  • Inventory laboratory supplies and place order with the lab vendors.
  • Restock laboratory supplies as appropriate.
  • Record/report missing or damaged laboratory supplies to the supervisor and request replacements as appropriate.
  • Champion safety, compliance, and quality control.

Regular and reliable on-site attendance is required.

Other Duties:

· Perform other related task as directed.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to add, subtracts, multiply, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

Education:

· High School Diploma or GED equivalent required

· Post-secondary education preferred.

· Phlebotomy Technician school completed.

· Certification from American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians required

· Formal training in Medical Terminology required.

· Previous phlebotomy training or experience preferred but not required.

· Registered Medical Assistant preferred but not required

Experience:

· Experience in clinical setting preferred but not required.

· Experience in specimen collection and processing preferred but not required
