Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii's largest locally owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory. SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position

Must be available Monday through Friday from 4:00 am to 6:30 pm, Saturday from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.

HIRING RANGE

$25.00 to $31.77 hourly

Actual pay commensurate with experience

JOB SUMMARY

  1. Responsible for the day-to-day operations and guides a team of phlebotomist to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care services. This position will efficiently and safely collect specimens and works with other departments to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  2. Assists with supervising employees and the day to day operations of the site and/or shift, including managing schedules, training, ordering supplies and troubleshooting laboratory and billing issues. (60%)*

  3. Participates and provides input in hiring, training, developing and ongoing feedback to employees.

  4. Assists with managing schedules, reviewing time off requests, and/or finding coverage.

  5. Conducts engaging and informative phlebotomy training sessions for employees, students and interns.

  6. Performs competency assessments and updates competency checklists.

  7. May order supplies and maintains inventory.

  8. Works with Client Services, Business Services, Marketing and other departments to troubleshoot and resolve issues, such as, specimen, testing, billing and coding issues.

  9. Contributes to process improvement initiatives.

  10. Performs collections from patients by venipuncture, finger sticks or other skin puncture techniques for routine, timed and stat orders. Services units, such as, Emergency Department, Cancer Center, Pediatric, Behavior Health/Psych, Ancillary, Clinic, etc. (20%)*

  11. Accessions laboratory test requests, including keying patient demographics into the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Performs accessioning of specimen orders. (10%)*

  12. Additional responsibilities, supports laboratory and hospital operations as required. (10%)*

  • Performs other collections:

  • Urine or blood collections for drug testing.

  • Breath alcohol testing (BAT).

  • Performs observed collections.

  • Nasal, observed nasal, and/or nasopharyngeal collections

  • Accurately identifies donor and completes chain of custody documents according to SOPs.

  • Serves as a witness on behalf of DLS.

  • Blood bank banding.

  • Prepares samples to transport/ship to Central Laboratory or designated reference laboratory for testing.

  • Provides morgue services 24/hours, 7 days/week, 365 days/year -follows all morgue procedures to meet regulatory requirements for the handling of bodies related to morgue duties. Follows operational guidelines to perform morgue duties.

  • Removes all deceased from facility morgue and meets mortuary representative when mortuary arrives to collect the deceased. Prepares all documentation related to morgue duties. Follows the morgue documentation processes and logging systems for all deceased; stores logs and documentation and ensures information is kept safe and confidential.

  • Performs handling, removal, and storage of deceased HHSC patients from the Emergency Department or facility patient floors or deceased delivered by EMS from non-HHSC locations, in morgue refrigerators/refrigerated locker(s). Shall shroud, tag and log the deceased in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Assists with viewing of the patient's body in coordination with social work/care and/or nursing administration.

  • Assists with morgue census in coordination with medical records department.

Communication Demands:

  • Able to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations, as appropriate.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Requires manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, corrected vision, and hearing to normal range.

  • Able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and respiratory equipment.

  • Able to distinguish and identify colors.

  • Able to lift and carry supplies or equipment weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds occasionally.

  • Able to stand, sit, bend and key up to six (6) hours intermittently.

  • Able to perform repetitive manual motion such as, but not limited to, pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.

  • Depending on work location:

  • Able to walk up to six (6) hours frequently.

  • Able to drive and get in/out of company vehicle up to six (6) hours frequently.

  • Client Services-Nursing Home:

  • Requires air and/or ground travel frequently.

  • Able to work off island up to four (4) weeks continuously.

Typical Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials possible.

  • Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Completion of a phlebotomy program.

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in science.

Experience:

Required:

  • Two (2) years patient care, medical laboratory or customer service experience.

  • Two (2) years experience in phlebotomy or one (1) year DLS phlebotomy experience.

  • Client Services-Nursing Home:One (1) year DLS Phlebotomy Specialist experience.

Certification:

Required :

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or California State License (CPT I and CPT II).

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both in verbal and written form.

Other Qualifications (as applicable):

Required:

  • Able to travel between business locations as needed.

  • Client Services-Nursing Home: Valid driver's license (full license, not provisional or intermediate) and current, clean traffic abstract.
