Overview

HarperCollins Publishers is seeking an Assistant Designer to join the Design Department, working in an exciting, creative, fast-paced environment. Focus of the department is General Adult Trade interior book design. In this role the Assistant Designer will provide administrative and design support to the Design Managers and the team, as well as learn to work on various facets of interior book design. This position is in Princeton, NJ and reports to the Senior Design Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative support to the Design Managers including organizing group meetings, record keeping, ordering supplies, etc.
  • Assist the Design team with maintaining font libraries, font purchases, and font EULAs.
  • Works on series designs and brand designs
  • Assists with design of offsets and/or paperback conversions, as well as processing files for trim size conversions
  • Assists the team with designing spine dies, inputting text corrections using InDesign, and reviewing page proofs
  • Under supervision, opportunity to design book interiors for titles of simple complexity, and build templates for typesetting
  • Posts files for printing to Printer's system and reviews preflight reports
  • Archives files in DAM and graphic artist contracts in Docushare
  • Assists in optimizing files for marketing/promotional materials
Qualifications
  • College degree or equivalent work experience
  • At least 1 year of relevant work experience (including but not limited to internships and/or coursework)
  • A strong interest in interior book design of Adult Trade books with an eagerness to learn
  • Some interior book design experience or equivalent a plus
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and maintain priorities under pressure
  • Mac and design skills using InDesign; a working knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator a plus
  • Course work in graphic design and typography preferred

The salary range for this position is $50,000-$55,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.
