School Custodian Position

The authorized level of the position is School Custodian IV. Applications are being accepted down to the School Custodian III in the event of recruiting difficulties. Salary Range: School Custodian III, WS-02: $4,672.00 per month. School Custodian IV, F1-02: $4,932.00 per month.

Examples of Duties
  1. Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school;
  2. Assigns, lays out, inspects and supervises the work of subordinates to insure that buildings and grounds areas are kept in a clean and orderly condition;
  3. Personally performs the more difficult maintenance work to plumbing and electrical fixtures and to woodwork not requiring journey worker level trade skills;
  4. Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions;
  5. Has charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums and loud speaker systems;
  6. Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants and lawns;
  7. Requisitions, receives, stores and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned and takes periodic inventories of such supplies and equipment;
  8. Maintains records of supplies dispensed and of equipment issued;
  9. Makes reports on work accomplished and of unusual happenings or accidents;
  10. Keeps daily time sheets;
  11. Has security responsibility for the school;
  12. Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours;
  13. May supervise student help when assigned;
  14. May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers;
  15. May perform the typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience Requirement: Applicants must have had the kind and quality of experience described below, and in the amounts shown in the following table:

General Experience: Progressively responsible work experience in one or a combination of the following areas:

  • (a) Janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting and cleaning of buildings;
  • (b) Grounds maintenance work experience including such activities as cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping and raking;
  • (c) General laboring experience such as moving materials, furniture and equipment; loading and unloading trucks; carrying, unloading and stacking tools and supplies for skilled craftsman; and digging trenches and ditches.

For School Custodian III and above, at least one year of the work experience must have been comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.

Supervisory Experience: Experience which has included responsibility for scheduling and inspecting the work of subordinates; instructing employees in the proper method of performing the work; maintaining discipline; insuring that safety practices are adhered to; and keeping records of work activities.

Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he is being considered.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
