New Voices is a Reproductive Justice organization that supports and builds power for and alongside Black women, Black queer folks, and Black marginalized communities through leadership development, community care, resourcing, and mutual aid. We operate in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) and Ohio (Cleveland), with leadership engagement at the regional level across the Midwest and Northeast and maintain a growing national influence.

Role Overview

The Narrative Strategy Director leads the organization's strategic communications and policy advocacy initiatives, ensuring that all messaging aligns with mission, values, and long-term goals. This role develops narrative strategies rooted in justice, shapes public understanding of key issues, and advances policy solutions that support the organization's vision.

Working closely with internal teams, this leader crafts compelling storytelling approaches, strengthens the organization's public voice, and deepens engagement with key communities. As a senior leader, the Narrative Strategy Director plays a central role in elevating Black women, Black queer individuals, and Black marginalized communities within the broader Reproductive Justice movement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to the communications and policy teams, ensuring strong collaboration, high performance, and alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Build and implement integrated policy and communications plans that support the organization's mission and advocacy priorities.
  • Oversee the Narrative Strategy department budget in partnership with the Executive Director and administrative leadership, monitoring spending, outcomes, and supporting grant-related reporting.
  • Support the execution of digital communications, including web content, social media, and multimedia storytelling.
  • Serve as a spokesperson in public settings, deliver policy remarks, and mentor staff in creating strong narrative and communications materials.
  • Represent the organization's issues through speaking engagements, media appearances, authored pieces, and other visibility opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Development Director to design marketing strategies that enhance public recognition and strengthen fundraising.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, training, and professional development to build team skills, leadership capacity, and alignment with goals.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • 3 years of experience working directly with Black women, Black queer communities, and Black marginalized people.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent blend of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or similar fields, including political or advocacy communications.
  • Affirms core principles of Reproductive Justice, and Human Rights framework, for Black women, Black queer folks, and Black marginalized communities.
  • Minimum of 5 years in senior nonprofit leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams.
  • Excellent leadership, people management, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, ability to engage various audience
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Travel 25% -30% annually

  • Experience in both communications and policy or public affairs work.
  • Proficiency in using Google Suite and CRM platforms.

Working Conditions
  • Standard office environment in Philadelphia with occasional travel to, Pittsburgh, or Cleveland; national travel as needed.
  • Fast-paced and highly collaborative work setting.
  • Requires sustained attention, creativity, and computer work.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required.
