Location: Honolulu Oahu

Hiring Range: $97,900.00 to $125,000.00

Job Summary

Serves as a professional meteorologist in the Department of Emergency Preparedness & Response, providing meteorological support, research, analysis, and advice to the Watch Office and incident management teams during PSPS and other high-impact weather events, overseeing tool development and operational hazard forecasting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implements procedures, monitors, analyzes, and produces short, medium, and long?range weather forecasts and reports for situational awareness during day?to?day operations and Incident Management Team activations.
  • Monitors weather conditions for increased fire weather potential and communicates risk to management, leading PSPS calls and meetings when senior staff are unavailable.
  • Supports and advises the Watch Office during inclement weather that may impact grid reliability and employee safety, coordinating alerts to grid operations and other affected organizations.
  • Works and trains with field personnel and key stakeholders across the company to understand equipment, asset, and business functions.
  • Develops tools to improve operational support and utilizes knowledge to enhance forecasting accuracy.
  • Interacts regularly with T&D Operations, field operations, and Fire Management personnel to maintain grid system knowledge and relationships.
  • Supports senior team members on projects, performing analytical tasks associated with less complex projects and feeding recommendations on situational awareness, fire prevention, and climate adaptation tools.
  • Participates in Weather Service meetings for learning and knowledge acquisition.
  • Maintains partnerships with meteorological, scientific, and technology communities to continuously improve forecasting skills and tools.
  • Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Basic Qualifications Knowledge Requirements
  • Broad understanding of how extreme weather events may affect an electric utility.
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies, methods, and practices needed for complex assignments.
  • Demonstrated statistical analysis and modeling experience.
  • Ability to interface and collaborate effectively with peers, clients, and management.
  • Clear and precise communication skills (written, verbal, presentation).
  • Working knowledge of general electrical utility procedures and operations.
  • Working knowledge of GIS.
  • Working knowledge of PCs and related software (MS Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Skills
  • Broad understanding of power markets and related regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated fire weather forecasting experience.
  • Experience integrating various weather outlooks and briefing users on uncertainties and impacts.
  • Experience forecasting one to seven-day ahead surface temperature and utilizing a wide variety of observational and model data.
  • Experience analyzing renewable power production and how weather impacts those resources.
  • Extensive knowledge of NWS system and use of NOAA products.
  • Experience configuring and running weather models.
  • Experience using SAS, R, or other tools for statistical analysis and forecasting.
  • Weather forecasting experience for Hawaii.
  • Experience forecasting for conditions related to or around wildfires.
  • Experience with long-term (month ahead or more) weather forecasting.
  • Experience preparing findings and presenting complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.

Education Requirements
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or related discipline.
  • Graduate degree is preferred.

Experience Requirements
  • At least 5 years in weather forecasting and statistical analysis.
  • Graduate degree may substitute for 2 years of experience.
