JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
To assist cargo operations with the barge ballast system, servicing of barge/operational equipment and barge inspection reporting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Ballasting & deballasting per operational loading and unloading needs.
* Visually inspects pumps, motors, valves, vent piping, pump room, lighting, electrical system, bilge water, vessel hulls, bulwarks, house superstructure, fences, manholes, hatches, doors, ducting and controllers.
* Monitors generator oil levels, oil pressure, revolutions per minute (rpm), battery water levels, radiator water levels, temperatures, amperage (amps), Frequency (hertz), and volts.
* Fueling and cleaning of generators.
* Connecting, disconnecting, turning on and off reefers.
* Completes Barge Inspection Reports upon arrival and departure of vessels.
* Sweeping and maintaining barges, terminals and yard area to keep free of debris.
* Wash refrigerated containers weekly to maintain proper sanitation.
* Operation and fueling of portable diesel tanks.
* Cleanup of chemical spills on pier and barges.
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES OF BARGES AND FACILITIES:
* Cleans and washes equipment and machines.
* Services and repairs lashing gear.
* Drives company vehicles.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
* Must have sufficient mathematical ability to calculate and measure material requirements.
* Must be attentive to detail and alert at all times to insure safety.
* Must be able to receive and follow instructions.
* Must have good judgment in handling equipment (i.e. balance, weight and coordination).
* Must be able to communicate well, both orally and in written form with co-workers, customers both internal and external.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Must have corrected vision, depth perception, and wide field of vision as required to obtain a driver's license to operate automobiles and to operate power-operated vehicles under OSHA Standard 1917.27(a)(2).
* Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying (up to 50 pounds): Occasionally to move or use tools, equipment, or materials.
* Valid Driver's license required.
* Ability to safely operate a wide range of powered tools, equipment and vehicles.
* High School diploma or equivalent.
* Good communication skills
* Sufficient math ability to calculate and measure material requirements
* Minimum 3 years experience in barge operations preferred.
* Mechanical experience working with pumps, valves, electrical generators, barge ballast system is preferred.
