The job duties involve the supervision of juveniles in a detention facility, in groups and individual activities, (1) to assist them in adjusting to detention, and (2) to maintain secure custody for their own or for the communitys protection. The work involves providing constructive and satisfying supervised activities adapted to the special needs of children and youth in confinement. It also involves observing, reporting and consulting on the behavior of the juveniles to screen for the undetected mentally or emotionally ill. A team concept is used involving judges, social workers, other professionals and juvenile detention workers in helping detainees adjust to the facility and providing individual guidance.
