At Leidos, we believe in challenging our staff with engaging assignments that promote both professional and personal growth. Helping you advance your career is not just a goal for us; it's a foundational part of our business imperative.

We are actively seeking Distribution Engineers who are enthusiastic about electric utility design engineering. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that each project, regardless of complexity, meets our high-quality standards. Collaborating closely with clients, you'll uphold Leidos' esteemed reputation in the industry. In this position, you'll cultivate your expertise across a range of areas, such as NESC, Structural Pole Modeling, Electrical Power Calculations, GIS design training, Field Data Collection, and Client Design Standards. Your most impactful work is yet to come!

In this role, you will:

  • Independently create design and construction work packages for moderately complex electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV to 138kV, focusing on programmatic initiatives like overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, and joint use.
  • Collaborate effectively with the project team to achieve daily objectives.
  • Review client-provided work and evaluate scope requirements.
  • Assist fellow technical staff with various tasks and assignments.
  • Prepare permitting documents for different Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Engage with permit agencies, right-of-way specialists, system owners, field leaders, forestry leaders, and third-party owners for joint pole ownership coordination.
  • Collaborate across multiple internal areas including project management and technical resources.
  • Communicate technical solutions, practices, and procedures effectively within the organization.
  • Travel as needed for site visits and client meetings.
  • Conduct engineering calculations, including structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, conductor sag and tension specifications, and voltage drop and flicker calculations.
  • Review the work of other engineers for client submissions.
  • Provide ongoing engineering support during construction, ensuring adherence to standards through post-construction evaluations.
  • Conduct root cause analyses of outages and propose mitigation strategies using engineering principles and design.
  • Adhere to all Leidos and client safety requirements, as well as design and quality standards.

What You Bring:

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • A Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution; relevant experience or certifications may substitute for a degree.
  • Familiarity with NESC Standards, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation, and Bluebeam and/or Adobe.
  • Experience with ESRI and GIS is a plus.
  • Proficiency in distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, Spida-Calc, and O-Calc.
  • Strong skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • A willingness to perform both field and office work.
  • Flexibility for overnight travel may be necessary (15-25% travel).
  • The capacity to work in outdoor environments.
  • Access to a personal vehicle.
