Position Summary:

The Histology Technician (Histotechnician) performs a full range of histological procedures and diagnostic laboratory tests in support of patient care within a military medical treatment facility. This role ensures accurate and timely processing of biological specimens and adheres to all relevant quality and safety standards, including Joint Commission and College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements.
Key Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Prepare and process tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists using appropriate techniques such as embedding, microtomy, staining, and cover slipping.
• Operate and maintain histology laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including clinical automation systems and laboratory information systems.
• Utilize systems such as the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and DMHRSi (Defense Medical Human Resources System internet); training will be provided prior to service commencement.
• Ensure all activities and processes meet Joint Commission and CAP standards.
• Maintain proper documentation and accurate records for quality control and compliance purposes.
• Follow established protocols and safety procedures to handle hazardous materials and biological specimens.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Certification Pathway Options:

Option 1: Certificate-Based Pathway

• Graduate from a Histology Technician training program accredited by:
  
  • The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), or
  • The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or
  • An educational program acceptable to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
• Certification: Current certification/registration as a Histotechnician by the ASCP.
• Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Histology Technician.

OR

Option 2: Degree-Based Pathway

• Education:
  
  • 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university, including:
    
    • At least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include both),
  • OR an associate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally) college/university with the same science requirements (may be obtained within or in addition to the associate degree).
• Certification: Current certification/registration as a Histotechnician by the ASCP.
• Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as specified in the Task Order
