Building Construction Inspector

The Department of Design and Construction, Facilities Division, is looking to hire a Building Construction Inspector. In this role, you'll inspect a wide variety of building construction projects from simple repairs to large, complex public buildings and park facilities. You'll make sure all work meets approved plans, specifications, contracts, and safety standards. Your inspections will help ensure our city's structures are built safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality.

What You'll Do:

  • Review and make corrections to shop drawings and submittals, payment requests, and construction schedules reflective of the journey level of expertise.
  • Check elevation requirements for installation of gas, water main, sewer lines, storm drain, catch basin and electrical duct lines, etc.
  • Coordinate tests to include but not be limited to concrete, special inspection, completed utilities, equipment, and systems.
  • Conduct daily field inspections of projects.
  • Coordinate and conduct pre-final and final inspection of assigned projects.
  • Prepare change orders, reports, costs and progress estimates, and correspondence related to assigned projects.
  • Evaluate and maintain records of work progress, activities of labor, and equipment and construction methods being used.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Most of the work is performed outside of a normal City office environment.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather and hazardous conditions at construction sites.
  • May be required to stand, walk and bend for extended periods of time.

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for restricted employment. EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Four (4) years of experience in inspecting or supervising a variety of building construction work. Such experience must have demonstrated: knowledge of standard practices, methods, processes and tools used in building construction, including standard formulae of structural stability and safety and the accepted safety standards. Knowledge of methods of inspection and the basic principles of statistics and equilibrium as applied to heavy construction. Ability to apply proper building inspection methods. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints. Ability to detect poor work quality, inferior materials and hazards of fire, structural failures, etc. Ability to deal tactfully with building contractors and workers. Ability to prepare reports and keep records. Substitution: An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university will substitute for up to two years of the required four years of experience in inspecting or supervising a variety of building construction work. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university will substitute for up to three years of the required four years of experience in inspecting or supervising a variety of building construction work. The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.
