About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven accounting professional to join Aloha United Way's Finance team. The Accounting Director will serve as AUW's in-house accounting expert, responsible for leading all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit. This role is critical to ensuring AUW's fiscal integrity as both a direct nonprofit operator and as Hawaiʻi's trusted philanthropic intermediary. The position reports to AUW's Vice President of Finance, a licensed CPA, offering eligible candidates the opportunity to gain CPA-supervised professional experience credit toward licensure.
The ideal candidate brings deep accounting expertise, strong nonprofit experience, and a collaborative mindset. This role works closely with the Vice President of Finance, the Finance Manager, and AUW's leadership team, and serves as a trusted advisor on accounting and reporting matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and manage AUW's monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial statements.
- Prepare and present financial reports for management, Board, and external stakeholders.
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
- Oversee complex balance sheet reconciliations and ensure accurate revenue/expense recognition, including fundraising campaign allocations.
- Partner with VP Finance to design and implement a total-cost allocation framework across all organizational activities.
Audit, Tax, and Compliance
- Serve as lead for the annual audit and IRS Form 990 preparation, coordinating all schedules, workpapers, and auditor communications.
- Oversee compliance with United Way Worldwide financial standards and governance reporting.
- File required tax and regulatory returns, including GET filings.
- Lead preparation of annual tax acknowledgements and donor reporting compliance.
- Maintain AUW's accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Support VP Finance in annual budget development.
- Support Finance Manager in budget vs. actual reviews, variance analysis, and Board reporting.
- Assist in cash flow forecasting and investment oversight.
- Lead AUW's accounting system (MIP) administration, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and integration with StratusLIVE (CRM).
- Lead AUW's accounting system conversion (MIP and related tools), ensuring accurate data migration, alignment with GAAP and nonprofit best practices, and minimal disruption to financial operations.
- Champion digitization and automation of accounting workflows, eliminating paper-based and manual processes wherever possible.
- Work with VP Operations and VP IT to implement electronic approvals, document management, and reporting tools to increase accuracy, transparency, and efficiency.
- Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.
- Partner with VP Operations and VP IT with system upgrades, testing, documentation, and staff training.
Supervisory & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Supervise the Accounting team, providing oversight, coaching, and professional development.
- Partner with Finance Manager (campaign operations) to ensure seamless coordination between CRM and MIP processes.
- Collaborate across AUW departments, building trust and promoting transparency in financial management.
Other Responsibilities
- Provide financial expertise for grants management, cost allocations, and restricted fund tracking.
- Contribute to AUW's strategic planning and organizational initiatives as a senior finance leader.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Required: Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit sector experience or a current CPA license (if no nonprofit experience).
- Audit, tax, or public accounting background highly valued.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal controls.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit compliance, grant reporting, and IRS/GAAP requirements.
- Proven ability to manage audits and regulatory filings with accuracy and timeliness.
- Adept at analyzing complex financial data, reconciling large data sets, and producing clear reports.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills; collaborative and solutions-oriented.
- Demonstrated success in implementing process/system improvements that increased efficiency or transparency.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and meet tight deadlines.
Pay Range: $85,000-$95,000
