Child and Youth Program Cook - CDC, PMRF

The purpose of the Child and Youth Program (CYP) Cook position is to perform a variety of food preparation and food service tasks for the CYP. This position is located in a child Development Center (CDC) but may assist with food preparation for the School Age Care (SAC) Program.

Duties

The CYP Cook performs various tasks in food service preparation. Tasks include food preparation, service, kitchen maintenance, and food storage.

Food Preparation and Service

Prepares all types of meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruit sauces, and gravies for menus. Prepares, cooks, seasons, portions food for all meals following standardized recipes. Plans, regulates, and schedules cooking procedures. Modifies recipes for ingredient quantities, servings, and equipment availability.

Kitchen Maintenance

Performs cleaning of serving carts, food preparation areas, cupboards, drawers, dishwashing areas; operates a mechanical dishwasher; scrubs cooking utensils; cleans exhaust hoods, floors, walls; sanitizes garbage room; maintains work area per NAVMED P5010 and local policies.

Food Storage

Labels and dates items in refrigerators and freezers; stores leftovers per sanitation and health standards; stores canned, boxed, frozen items; may unload food and supplies from delivery trucks.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Compliance with security, fire, and sanitation rules and regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and related standards.
  • Serves as mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid food handlers' card.
  • Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Must pass pre‑employment physical, provide immunization evidence, be free of communicable diseases, obtain appropriate immunization.
  • Ability to complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials required by federal, state, or national institutions used as part of DoD's Child and Youth Programs.
  • Complete all background checks per PL 101‑647 including National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).
  • Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within first 30 days of employment.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of food handling techniques, personal hygiene standards, and safe work procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of food preparation principles, including developing new or revising recipes and preparing large quantities.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation standards to prevent contamination.
  • Skill to prepare and cook large quantities of food, evaluate final products, and initiate corrective action.
  • Skill to develop and modify recipes for quantity cooking.
  • Skill to manage various cooking processes ensuring safe temperature and time control.
  • Ability to coordinate quantity food production involving multiple cooking methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and oral; strong interpersonal skills.

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Provide a copy of your H.S. Diploma, GED, or College Transcripts when you apply.

Note: If your degree has not been awarded you MUST also provide a copy of your HS Diploma or equivalent.

All individuals involved in the provision of child care services on a DON installation must complete the Installation Records Check (IRC), including Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP), Family Advocacy Program (FAP), and security/base checks. Background Checks per DoDI 1402.05 automatically disqualify certain convictions and civil adjudications. Candidates should be committed to improving governmental efficiency, upholding the U.S. Constitution, and following DoD policies.
