Job Opportunity with State of Hawai'i

The immediate vacancies are within the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and located at the Women's Community Correctional Center in Kailua and the Oahu Community Correctional Center in Kalihi.

Salary: $4,961 to $6,043 per month (SR 20, Step D to I). Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors. This continuous recruitment may be closed at any time.

Plans, organizes, coordinates and evaluates a recreation program for an assigned corrections work area; conducts varied and comprehensive recreational activities; and performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements: Legal Authorization to Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States. Education: A bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, recreational therapy, leisure education, psychology, corrections, sociology, human development or other recreational or behavioral science field. Course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester credit hours in courses such as community recreation, physical fitness, abnormal psychology, counseling, behavior management, criminal justice, human personality and behavior. General Experience: Six (6) months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an organized athletic/recreation program for groups of people, which included professional level experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and carrying out of such athletic/recreation programs. Specialized Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible professional work experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and conducting recreation programs and/or activities in a correctional setting, to stimulate and sustain the interest of the participants and contribute to their physical, creative, social and cultural development and overall well-being. For the III and IV levels, at least one (1) year of the SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE must have been comparable to the next lower level in the State service. Driver's License: Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancies have this requirement. Supervisory Aptitude: Demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision, e.g., by serving as a group or team leader, by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: As required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA), Federal law states that "....an agency shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with inmates and who: (1) Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution. (2) Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse. (3) Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in #2 above. (4) Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
