Job Summary

The Security Director leads and manages all aspects of campus security and emergency response for Brigham Young University–Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC). Overseeing a team of approximately 80 full‑time, part‑time, and student employees, this role ensures a safe, service‑oriented environment for students, employees, volunteers, missionaries, visitors, and tourists.

Primary Responsibilities

Campus Security (55%)

• Develop and sustain visible, service‑oriented security programs across the university and PCC through patrols, training, and proactive prevention measures.
• Direct crowd management, dignitary protection, parking operations, and access services.
• Lead internal investigations of criminal and non‑criminal matters.
• Manage emergency preparedness and disaster response.
• Actively participate in the campus Behavior Intervention Team.

Law Enforcement & Community Relations (10%)

• Serve as primary liaison with local and state law enforcement agencies.
• Ensure compliance with city/county ordinances and coordinate response procedures with community partners.
• Represent university security interests on councils and committees.
• Support disaster recovery and emergency response efforts.

Leadership & Administration (15%)

• Recruit, train, and evaluate departmental staff and student employees.
• Establish training standards and ensure ongoing compliance with best practices and regulations.
• Manage scheduling, operations planning, and departmental budgets.
• Maintain the CLERY Act daily log and annual report.

Facilities & Asset Protection (10%)

• Oversee access control, surveillance, and facility security procedures.
• Manage after‑hours building access and security systems.

Policy Enforcement (5%)

• Develop, implement, and enforce security related university policies (trespassing, parking, disruptive behavior, etc.).
• Oversee patrol, ticketing, appeals, and violator education.

Communications & Systems (5%)

• Develop, implement, and enforce security related university policies (trespassing, parking, disruptive behavior, etc.).

Minimum Qualification and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related field, master's degree preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive leadership experience in law enforcement or public security.
• Strong knowledge of campus security operations, Title IX, and the Act.
• Formal training in surveillance systems, access control, crime prevention, and emergency response highly desirable.
• Proven ability to lead in crisis situations, make sound decisions, and balance enforcement with service.

Reporting & Authority

• Reports directly to the Vice President of Operations.
• Works closely with PCC leadership and university executives.
• Supervises seven campus patrol supervisors, operations center supervisor, campus security officers, and departmental manager, as well as part‑time and student employees.
• Operates independently in directing security operations, with authority to act as first responder in emergencies.

Approximate starting salary: $106,000 – $131,000. The salary offered could be above or below range based on education and experience as it relates to the job description.
