Packaging Manager – Kona Brewing Hawaii

We are seeking a Packaging Manager to join our team at Kona Brewing Hawaii. This is a regular full-time, salaried position responsible for planning, directing and implementing all activities of the Packaging department in coordination with the Operations Leadership team. The Packaging Manager provides leadership and daily oversight of all canning and kegging operations to ensure safety standards and production goals are met.

Note: This position may require a shift that includes nights and weekends.

Essential Job Functions

  • Support the company's Statement of Purpose and Values.
  • Support safety initiatives and OSHA compliance; contribute to safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment in the Brewhouse/Cellar; continually evaluate Packaging SOPs and safety/production standards.
  • Be accountable for OEE, gainshare, OBM, continuous improvement and 6S for the Packaging area.
  • Adhere to and promote company policies; ensure direct reports comply at all times.
  • Ensure departmental material receiving and production data are entered in Beer 30 accurately and timely.
  • Support end-of-month inventory counts.
  • Conduct performance assessments and implement recognition, training or corrective action as needed.
  • Lead and motivate the Packaging team to ensure effective operation, quality, asset care and optimization of the brewing business unit.
  • Support efficiency improvements in packaging practices, procedures, and technical aspects of brewing operations.
  • Communicate effectively with all employees, management, clients and vendors.
  • In coordination with HR, Sr Ops Mgr – Safety and Operations Training, and VP of Operations, participate in hiring decisions for Packaging department staff and anticipate staffing needs.
  • Develop and build a team with strong canning and kegging technical knowledge.
  • Manage cost-effective scheduling of all department labor and approve time sheets.
  • Direct training and performance evaluations of supervised employees.
  • Support weekly and monthly inventory audits and reconcile variances.
  • Develop, manage, and analyze packaging production plans and weekly schedules to align with the sales and supply chain plan; ensure just-in-time delivery of finished products.
  • Collaborate with Innovation, QA, Brewhouse/Cellar, Supply Chain, Maintenance & Engineering, and KRRC managers to optimize operations and product delivery.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain and capacity planning to meet production goals and on-time shipments.
  • Ensure the packaging department meets customer demands and adjust as needed.
  • Perform required maintenance and changeovers on packaging equipment and train employees accordingly.
  • Be able and willing to work a variable shift schedule based on brewery operations.
  • Physical requirements: ability to reach, twist, stoop, crouch, stand and walk for 8-10 hour shifts; lift up to 50 lbs; be on-call 24/7 as needed.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements

4 year degree in Food Science, Brewing Technology, Biology or similar field and graduation from an accredited School of Brewing. 5+ years of related experience. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The candidate should have strong safety and production knowledge in brewing. Must be self-motivated with excellent communication and leadership skills, and be 21 years of age or older. Ability to work under manufacturing production pressures and possess strong time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) is required. Previous experience as a Packaging Manager or Brewing Manager in a brewery of similar size is preferred. Ability to wear PPE and work in varying weather conditions is required.
