Work Location: The positions are located at the Hale Ho`omalu Juvenile Detention Facility in Kapolei, Oahu.
Gender-Specific Positions: The positions require the employee to be of the same gender (male) as that of the client being served.
Shiftwork: These positions require applicants to work on a rotating shift basis. You must be willing and able to work weekends, nights, holidays, and rotating shifts; and work outside of normally scheduled work hours.
Intermittent (on call) Work Hours: Some positions are identified as intermittent (on call) for work scheduling purposes. Intermittent (on call) work hours vary from 0 - 40 hours per week dependent on the needs of the department. For such positions, you must be willing and able to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
Test Information: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be required to pass an Attitudinal Test to be eligible for employment consideration. The Attitudinal Test is administered on Oahu. Candidates must report for the exam in person. We do not offer our exams online or out-of-state.

Summary of Duties
The job duties involve the supervision of juveniles in a detention facility, in groups and individual activities, (1) to assist them in adjusting to detention, and (2) to maintain secure custody for their own or for the community's protection. The work involves providing constructive and satisfying supervised activities adapted to the special needs of children and youth in confinement. It also involves observing, reporting and consulting on the behavior of the juveniles to screen for the undetected mentally or emotionally ill. A team concept is used involving judges, social workers, other professionals and juvenile detention workers in helping detainees adjust to the facility and providing individual guidance.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Education Requirement: Graduation from high school. Excess experience of the type and quality described below or work experience requiring the ability to read and comprehend and apply written directions of a high degree of verbal skill may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
General Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates the ability to follow instructions, learn and apply work procedures, work effectively with other people, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Special Requirement: Experience and/or training which demonstrates the ability to lead, supervise, or instruct youths to insure a secure and safe environment.
Substitutions Allowed:
Substitution of Education for Experience:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university will be deemed to have met the General Experience.
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field will be deemed to have met all of the requirements.
3. Education in a baccalaureate program from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field may be substituted for the General Experience and Special Requirement on the basis of 15 semester credits for six (6) months of work experience.
Driver License: A valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle is required.
Testing Information:
1. Applications will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the minimum qualification requirements and public employment requirements.
2. Qualified applicants will be notified by email to schedule an Attitudinal Test. The Attitudinal Test will be administered in Honolulu, Oahu only. Candidates must report for the exam in person. Due to the confidentiality of the test materials, the Attitudinal Test is not available online or administered out-of-state.
3. Only applicants who pass the Attitudinal Test will be eligible for employment consideration.
Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Requirement: In accordance with the PREA Federal law, the Hawaii State Judiciary shall not hire or promote anyone who may have contact with detainees in juvenile facilities and lockups, with inmates detained in a prison or jail, or with residents of community confinement facilities who:
a. Has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility or other institution;
b. Has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse;
c. Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in b above; or
d. Has been the subject of substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or sexual harassment, or resigned during a pending investigation of alleged sexual abuse or sexual harassment.
