Position Title: Assistant Mechanical Superintendent
Reports To: Mechanical Department Manager

Position Summary:

Assists the Mechanical Department Manager in supervising approximately 15-20 machinists and mechanics engaged in ship repair and product fabrication. Responsibilities include repair and manufacture of mechanical components, machining, fabricating with CNC equipment, disassembly/reassembly of shipboard machinery, and installation of shipboard equipment. Collaborates with the Superintendent to supervise union workers, ensuring work is completed on time and within budget, while enforcing safety and environmental standards. The assistant superintendent assigns jobs, communicates with staff, and makes recommendations regarding personnel matters. In the absence of the Superintendent, assumes duties as directed by the Production Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Organizes staff and equipment to meet project requirements.
  • Prioritizes tasks as directed.
  • Interacts with customers as needed.
  • Ensures projects meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Supervises mechanics and machinists.
  • Assists management with mentoring and performance reviews.
  • Develops work schedules and staffing plans.
  • Approves time cards and leave requests.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Skills/Technical Knowledge:

  • Excellent communication skills, positive attitude, and strong work ethic.
  • Team player.

Education, Training & Experience:

  • Knowledge of marine industry and NAVSEA standards.
  • Preferred background in mechanical engineering.
  • Flexible work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Minimum five years of ship repair or marine industry experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of ship repair processes.
  • Experience managing federal contracts.
  • Proficient in MS Office and other office tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Mechanical background with machining, rigging, and hand tools.
  • Marine machinist/mechanic experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of equipment alignment, valve and pump repair, hydraulic systems, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to plan work based on current and future needs.
  • Knowledge of marine/ship standards and specifications.
  • Shipyard/industrial experience valuable.

Description of Work Environment:

  • Heavy industrial/shipyard setting with exposure to various environmental conditions and hazards.
  • Use of PPE required, including hearing protection, safety glasses, boots, face shields, and possibly respirators.

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Proof of legal right to work in the U.S.
  • U.S. Citizenship required for base access.
  • Ability to obtain TWIC and DBIDS credentials.
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check.
  • Valid Hawaii REAL ID or U.S. Passport and Hawaii Driver's License.
  • Reliable transportation to work sites.
