Job Purpose / Summary:
  • Prepare meals for crew members.
  • Create store lists and retrieve supplies.
  • Manage activities within the monthly budget.
  • Perform general maintenance in the galley and on the vessel.
  • Maintain sanitary standards in the galley.
  • Handle seaman/deckhand duties such as handling lines, tow wires, setting blocks, lifting and securing bridles, etc.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer/Engineer in the engine room.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

To be successful in this role, candidates should have the ability to prepare nutritious meals, operate basic tools, and communicate effectively with team members.

Working Conditions:
  • Work indoors and outdoors in various weather and sea conditions, including wet, humid, noisy, and dusty environments. May involve exposure to paints, solvents, and thinners.
  • Use of galley appliances and basic hand and power tools.
  • Potentially drive a company van to deliver supplies.
  • This is a casual, on-call position with variable hours, including work days from Monday to Sunday.
Mental Demands:
  • Must have sufficient mathematical skills for store listing.
  • Attention to detail and alertness to ensure vessel and crew safety.
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to sit for long periods.
  • Climb and balance between pier, vessel, and barge.
  • Perform physical tasks such as stooping, squatting, reaching, and throwing lines.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift up to 50 pounds, and handle lines and equipment.
  • Maintain correct vision and color perception as required by US Coast Guard standards.
Minimum Requirements:
  • US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document with steward's department endorsement; STCW 95 endorsement preferred; valid drivers license.
  • Ability to prepare balanced meals and operate basic tools.
  • Current TB clearance.
  • Completion of culinary schooling with at least 2 years of meal prep experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Strong verbal, reading, and writing skills.
  • At least 3 years of seaborne galley experience preferred.
