Duties and Responsibilities (*denotes essential functions):
- *Provide mechanical engineering services and technical assistance in the operation and maintenance of all facilities. This includes: gathering information and data in the field, investigating problems and providing evaluations and solutions to the many variations of mechanical systems.
- *Consult and maintain close liaison with private engineering consultants, public utilities, and contract specialists to inform and discuss serious difficulties, problems, and other related issues.
- *Inspect repair, maintenance and renovation projects under construction to insure facilities are built according to engineering plans and specifications.
- *Monitor construction progress to assure timely completion of all projects.
- *Enforce materials quality assurance standards and insure on-site compliance with various standards.
- Review and approve submittal, substitution requests, shop drawings, as-built drawings, etc.
- *Responsible for the authoritative staff review of a variety of mechanical engineering plans and specifications such as air conditioning, plumbing, ventilation and control systems.
- *Prepare repair and maintenance bid documents, project schedules and cost estimates and coordinate the execution and construction of mechanical projects as well as the various building systems repair projects.
- Monitor and assure all building and campus systems are operating properly and efficiently. Building and campus systems include but not limited to architectural, mechanical, electrical and civil systems.
- Provide response and assessment to emergency situations related to mechanical systems.
- Perform duties outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet deadlines or project needs and for emergency response.

Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for physical plant operations of building systems; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in physical plant operations of building systems as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with physical plant operations of building systems.Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:
Considerable working knowledge of energy management control systems/building automation systems such as: Metasys, Automatic Logic, Tracer, Alerton, Carrier Network and Siebe.Knowledge of all the equipment functions in building systems such as chilled water loop, primary and secondary systems, emergency generators, lighting control systems, and electrical distribution systems.Knowledge of construction inspection.Knowledge of building construction materials, cost classification and analytical techniques and specification writing.Ability to prepare and review construction cost estimates and building material lists and specifications.Ability to integrate and coordinate various construction activities.Ability to inspect construction sites to insure conformity with plans, specifications and contractual timetables.Ability to work outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends as directed.Desirable Qualifications
Knowledge of the University of Hawaii facilities.Knowledge of plumbing, pneumatic, electric and electronic controls, and the ability to troubleshoot and diagnose control problems for the various mechanical systems.Familiar with workplace safety requirements.Familiar with work order management system such as AIM.Familiarity with different types of compressors such as: hermetic, reciprocating, rotary/screw/scroll, and centrifugal.Familiarity with different types of refrigeration systems such as: low and medium temperature refrigeration boxes, and freezers and subzero boxes.Understanding of the State Procurement project delivery process for repairs and maintenance.EEO, Clery Act, ADA
