Job Summary:

The primary focus is to monitor and respond to patient deterioration utilizing the Early Warning System. Oversees hospital administrative daily operations. Ensures accessible, appropriate, patient-focused, and cost-effective services. Collaborates with administrative and medical teams to ensure timely, quality care, and safe hospital operations. Develops, implements, and monitors policies and procedures to support organizational goals and business objectives. Evaluates processes to improve systems across the continuum. Identifies and implements strategies to reduce costs and improve quality of care/services. Serves as a role model.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Implements rounding identified in the Early Warning System (EWS) workflows. Participates in assessment, planning, and treatment of patients as identified during EWS rounds. Responds to RRTs and Code Blues. Takes an active leadership role in these events. May perform patient care to maintain clinical expertise, competency, and licensing, and to direct care on a unit.
  • Coordinates and conducts in-services, simulations, and mock codes. Collaborates with educators and clinical coordinators to meet staff needs. Models high standards of professional practice (ANA Scope & Standard), owns their professional development.
  • Communicates goals, objectives, accountabilities, priorities, and authority parameters to staff. Ensures staff completes mandatory education and clinical competencies. Provides nursing consultation to unit staff, peers, and other hospital personnel. Provides management coverage for the nursing department.
  • Acts as on-site administrative representative for Hospital Administration outside of regular hours. Communicates with and reports issues to the Administrator On-Call. Provides direction and support to ancillary services after hours to ensure quality service and safety.
  • Provides direction for Hospital Operations team and is responsible for daily hospital operations. Responds to emergencies, serves as Incident Commander and Operations Manager during emergencies, and ensures resolution and documentation.
  • Identifies risk management issues and potential events. Communicates with departments or managers for follow-up. Maintains oversight of hospital capacity and capability. Manages diversionary status based on hospital capacity and capability, including triggering diverts.
  • Communicates pertinent information during shift reports, to Unit Managers, the Administrator on-call, and other leaders. Triages and prioritizes admissions. Ensures quality patient care according to standards and staffing policies.
  • Accepts transferred patients considering hospital capacity and staffing. Coordinates transfers from other facilities. Facilitates emergent care and safety needs. Mobilizes personnel as necessary for hospital operations and safety.
  • Coordinates patient care with physicians and healthcare team. Advocates for patients and families. Resolves customer service issues and communicates for further action. Monitors patient care and assesses complex solutions.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., EMTALA, CMS, TJC). Reviews and interprets standards and policies. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by efficient triage, prioritization, and resource utilization.
  • Orients staff to operations. Adjusts staffing based on census and acuity. Communicates exceptions to management.
  • Enforces departmental policies. Collaborates with leadership. Provides care for Health Plan members responsibly.
  • Maintains skills and knowledge for safe patient care. Completes mandatory training. Keeps updated on legislation and regulations. Participates in meetings and team projects.
  • May perform patient care to maintain clinical expertise, competency, and licensing. Provides direct patient care as needed within scope and legal requirements.
  • Incorporates the KP Nursing vision, model, and values throughout practice.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of acute care experience, including specialized training or successful completion of relevant programs.
