Job Summary

The Senior Research Scientist is an established leader in cell biology and electrophysiology research and will lead experimentation supporting preclinical, collaborative, and drug discovery projects. They will also contribute to supervising staff, leading the preparation of manuscripts and reports, and working with other organizational units to ensure compliance with HPU and funding policies.

Compensation: $46,667 annually

This is a part-time (30% FTE), exempt, on-site position at Hawai'i Pacific University, funded through a federally sponsored NIH grant. The total annualized salary for this role is $160,000, with 30% of effort allocated to HPU. Funding status may impact the position's duration or compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field
  • Proven experience leading cell biology research projects
  • Eight+ years' experience in cell culture, fluorescent imaging, RNA/DNA handling, electrophysiology (including patch-clamp and multi-well plate readers)
  • Eight+ years supervising cell culture laboratories and instrumentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, IGOR, and statistical software (e.g., GraphPad)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Peer-reviewed publications demonstrating scientific expertise and leadership
  • Five+ years in preclinical drug discovery
  • Expertise in ion channel biology, magnesium transport proteins, and brain ischemia
  • Experience with database management and data quality control
  • Ability to manage technical staff and collaborate across institutions

Other Qualifications:

  • Availability to support the department, including during winter break if needed
  • Must meet background check and training requirements, and comply with the Protection of Minors policy
  • Flexibility to work all shifts and extended hours

Key Responsibilities

  1. Supervise preclinical cell culture experiments (80%)
  • Maintain cell cultures and supplies, oversee experiments, imaging, transformation, and data analysis
  • Train and supervise students in cell culture and electrophysiology (5%)
