Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU . CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.
LOCATION : The U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii provides installation management service and support for Army and civilian personnel at Pohakuloa Training Area and other sub-installations located throughout the islands of Oahu and Hawaii. The Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division supports the U.S. Army's commitment to environmental excellence in all aspects of the Army's mission in Hawaii. While balancing the unique considerations of mission, community and the environment, the Environmental Division assists U.S. Army Hawaii to continuously strive to improve its environmental performance and seeks to lessen environmental footprint and prevent pollution; minimize impact on the Hawaiian land; conserve, preserve and protect our natural and cultural resources; and comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
Position Summary
A GIS /Cultural Resources Specialist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) to support the U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii ( USAG -HI) at Pohakuloa Training Area ( PTA ) on the Island of Hawaii. This position may also provide support to Schofield Barracks on the Island of Oahu, as needed. This position includes a combination of office and field activities to gather and verify data and to maintain, and update ESRI -compatible cultural resource geospatial data in compliance with U.S. Army spatial data standards ( SDSFIE ) and security requirements. Ensures data and metadata is complete and accurate. Incorporates new or updated information about cultural resources. Provides guidance and training to Cultural Resources staff on geospatial issues and tools. Manages, maintains, and secures data in one or more data systems. Familiarizes him/herself with existing data, schema, and Army cultural resources program requirements. Responds to data requests to support program requirements. The GIS /Cultural Resources Specialist will work closely, and in collaboration with, the CEMML Cultural Resources Project Director (Supervisor) and the USAG -HI Cultural Resource Manager ( CRM ) and Army staff in the Environmental Division in the Directorate of Public Works of USAG -HI.
All work must be done in accordance with the Cooperative Agreement Statement of Objectives. The GIS /Cultural Resources Specialist should be capable of independent, self-directed work, but must function as part of an integrated team to accomplish tasks and assignments in support of USAG -HI Cultural resource Program priorities, standards, and goals. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with internal/external staff, officials, and the public in a professional manner. The work will be primarily conducted in an office setting at PTA involving operation of computers, plotters, printers, Trimble GPS units, and other standard office equipment. However, the incumbent must be willing and able to participate in strenuous field activities.
