Job Summary

The Shift Supervisor's primary responsibility is to oversee security operations in assigned areas of the Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYUH) campus and the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) to maximize the safety and security of people and property. These responsibilities include implementing and maintaining security protocols, policies, and procedures to ensure the environment is safe for faculty, staff, students, visitors, BYUH/PCC buildings, and property. Responsible for hiring part-time non-student and student employee personnel, training, supervising, and delegating tasks and duties. Responsible for proper care and upkeep of vehicles, bikes, radios, and equipment, reviewing and approving reports, and making timely notifications. Required to get the State of Hawaii Guard Card Certification.

Primary Responsibilities

Supervisory Duties (65%)

• Responsible for hiring, training/coaching/mentoring, and supervising part-time and student security.
• Ensure adherence to department policies, security procedures, and university regulations.
• Write clear, concise incident reports.
• Complete a Shift Summary after each shift and inform the incoming supervisor.
• Ensure shift coverage to maintain minimum staffing.
• Ensures that proper documentation and notifications are made on calls for service.
• Responsible for administrative duties.
• Review all incident reports, documents, etc., for accuracy.
• Provide direction and positively influence for the security officers.
• Work out solutions to problems that may arise during a security shift.
• Provide training and conduct inspections of security guards, equipment, and vehicles.
• Help payroll resolve timekeeping discrepancies.
• Manage new hire orientation training programs and checklists, train and re-train staff, and assess, evaluate, and record performance evaluations.
• Create and Maintain a shift log assignment of activities

Security Duties (25%)

• Protect life and property on campus.
• Perform special assignments as requested by campus scheduling and administrative staff for the respective areas of responsibility (i.e., LSB, CAC, HGB, Science and Math, ACR, TVAs, Hales', Parking, and Building).
• Impartially provide security services to the campus, utilizing bicycle, foot, and vehicle patrols.
• Enforce campus policies pertaining to public safety, and university traffic and parking regulations.
• Conduct investigations of suspicious activities.
• Respond to campus alarms.
• Conduct field interviews of suspicious or unauthorized individuals.
• Conduct trouble reports of hazardous conditions.
• Promote crime prevention and awareness.
• Develop and foster good relationships with university personnel, students, and law enforcement.
• Work special events to provide security coverage at critical locations.
• Work other duties as assigned by the Security Manager.
• Respond to calls for service.
• Respond to life-threatening situations (i.e. threats, active shooter, etc.).
• Responds to medical emergencies and campus hazards.
• Perform traffic direction and parking enforcement.
• Responsible to assist other campus entities when requested (i.e. custodial, grounds, auxiliary maintenance, lock shop, electric shop, police, fire, EMS, etc.).
• Assists stalled or stranded motorists.
• After-hours response to fire alarms, mechanical malfunctions, physical plant problems, and natural and man-made catastrophes, and determines who to call out as initial responders.
• Display proficiency in alarms, cameras, and other security systems.
• Respond to calls and emergencies as an incident commander, on-scene supervisor, or primary responder

Special Events (10%)

• Officers are required to work special events, such as Dances, Cultural Nights, Food Fest, and Devotionals. Security Officers can and will be assigned to traffic, gates, doors, and other posts as needed to provide a safe and secure environment at these events.
• Other special events include, but are not limited to, performing arts, sports, conferences, youth activities, and others. Security Officers may be required to work these events as well.

• Approve incident reports and ensure they are complete and accurate.
• Coordinate staffing needs.
• Determine when an investigation or call for service should be handed over to law enforcement.
• Conduct interviews and hiring/termination of student/PT employees.
• Conduct security assessments for areas of responsibility and make necessary recommendations for both procedural and physical improvements.

Referred

• Refer major employment decisions to the Security Manager within chain of command.
• Policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualification and Experience

• High School graduate or completed GED program.
• College degree or similar educational experience preferred.

Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications

• Security management experience or law enforcement equivalent rank of sergeant or above.
• Maintain training requirements each year.
• Possession of Hawaii Driver's License without a record of suspension or revocation in any state.
• Must be able to work in all weather conditions, 8 to10 hour rotating shifts, and weekends and holidays as assigned.
• Must be able to work frequent overtime for “Special Events”.
• Must pass a thorough background investigation.
• Must have no convictions for serious criminal, traffic, drug, or domestic violence violations.
• Must be trained and skilled in defense control tactics.
• Must be familiar with the campus.
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality
• Must have a working knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws and procedures, including search, seizure, citizen's arrest, and use of force.
• Must also be familiar with BYUH policies and procedures.
• Ability to supervise and mentor student and part-time employees.
• Understanding of crime prevention theory and application.
• Must be familiar with the incident command system.
• In-depth knowledge of the university's emergency preparedness program.
• In-depth knowledge of university and BYUH/PCC security policies and procedures.
• Ability to make good split-second decisions.
• Must be First Aid/CPR certified after 90 days of hire date.
• Ability to act as a role model and lead by personal example.
• Encourage teamwork and cooperation; remain calm, cool, and collected in all circumstances; handle conflict and resolve issues tactfully and diplomatically.
• Use caution and discretion when faced with a crisis situation, seek assistance from management and/or law enforcement personnel, use your best judgment, and ensure the staff is trained, re-trained, and follows proper security protocols and procedures.
