Position Title: Assistant Mechanical Superintendent

Reports To: Mechanical Department Manager

  • Position Summary:

Assists Mechanical/Machinist Superintendent in supervising approximately 15-20 machinists and mechanics work in support of ship repair and product fabrication. This includes but is not limited to: repair of mechanical components, manufacture and repair of components by machining, fabricating components with CNC cutters, mills, lathes, disassembly/reassembly of various shipboard machinery/equipment, and installation/re-installation of shipboard machinery/equipment. Under direction and in collaboration with the Superintendent, supervises union ship workers engaged in mechanical and machinist duties ensuring accomplishment of assigned work on time and within budget. Enforces safety and environmental regulations. The assistant superintendent generates job assignments and communicates to subordinate employees, makes recommendations to the superintendent on matters related to hiring, termination, suspension, advancement, promotion, demotion, discipline, addresses or adjust employee grievances and other supervisory duties as required. In the absence of the Superintendent, will assume duties and responsibilities as directed by the Production Manager.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Direct and organize staff and equipment to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Prioritize work and tasks as directed by Production Manager and Superintendent.
  • Interact with customers as required
  • Meet deadlines and budget constraints
  • Work with minimum supervision
  • Supervises the mechanics and machinists
  • Responsible for assisting management, in mentoring and review of performance on a regular basis
  • Develop work and production schedules, project staffing needs
  • Approve Time Cards, requests for time off
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills/Technical Knowledge

  • Excellent communication skills, good attitude and exceptional work ethic
  • Good attitude; must be a team player

Education, Training And Experience

  • Knowledge of the marine industry and NAVSEA Standards
  • Preferred mechanical engineering background
  • Must be flexible in work hours. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required based on the needs of the business.
  • Minimum five (5) years of ship repair or marine industry experience preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of ship repair processes.
  • Knowledge of managing Federal Contracts
  • Proficient with MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and Outlook and various office tools
  • Blueprint and schematic reading/interpretation
  • Mechanical background, machining/milling, rigging, hand tools, etc., required
  • Marine machinist/mechanic background desired
  • Experience with equipment alignment, valve and pump repair, hydraulic systems and troubleshooting, and shipboard systems is a plus.
  • Ability to plan work according to current and projected needs.
  • Knowledge of and experience with comm rcial and military marine/ship standards and specifications.
  • Shipyard/Industrial Experience valuable

Description Of Work Environment

  • Work in heavy industrial/shipyard setting with exposure to heat, cold, and humidity, industrial odors, fumes, gasses, chemicals, oil, grease, smoke, dust, noise, and vibration, and involves climbing ladders and stairs, using pneumatic tools, working in cramped quarters, and working with moving machinery.
  • Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth), and welding apron/chaps. A respirator may also be required.

Qualification/Requirements

Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States

This position requires US Citizenship due to clearance required for base access

Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites
