As a Customs and Border Security Officer (CBPO), you will be an essential member of our workforce dedicated to safeguarding the American public by protecting our borders, deterring illegal activities, and enhancing national economic security. Key responsibilities include:

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture regulations.
  • Facilitating legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and vehicles.
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals entering the United States.
  • Preventing illegal entry and the smuggling of contraband.

Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary for newly appointed CBPOs is as follows:

  • GL-5: $49,739 - $61,833
  • GL-7: $56,623 - $71,615
  • GL-9: $63,148 - $81,480

Locality pay varies based on the duty location. A fully trained CBP Officer can earn up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to their starting salary. This is a career ladder position with opportunities for promotion through GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, and GS-12, contingent upon successful completion of tenure in each grade.

Officers can select from a wide range of federal employment benefits, including health and dental insurance, ample annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, which resembles a traditional and ROTH 401(k) plan.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following:

  • Experience: At least three years of full-time general work experience demonstrating interpersonal skills and the ability to learn and apply information; OR
  • Education: A bachelor's degree or completion of a four-year educational program from an accredited college or university; OR
  • Combination: A mix of relevant education and work experience.

To qualify for the GS-7 grade level, you must meet one of the following:

  • Experience: At least one year of specialized full-time work experience equivalent to GS-5, related to inspections at borders or immigration compliance; OR
  • Education: A bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of graduate-level education; OR
  • Combination: A combination of specialized experience and graduate education.

If you have law enforcement or military experience, you may also qualify for the GS-9 grade level.

Additional Requirements

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age Restriction: Candidates must be referred before reaching their 40th birthday; exemptions may apply for current/former federal law enforcement personnel.
  • Veterans Preference: Eligible veterans may receive special consideration under certain circumstances.

All recruited officers must successfully complete a pre-academy orientation and a comprehensive 101-day training program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
