The Department of Parks and Recreation, Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division is hiring two (2) Recreation Director II (Swim) positions, one located at the Waialua Complex, and one at the Makiki Complex. These positions independently perform professional work in planning, organizing, and directing a comprehensive aquatic program at one or more municipal aquatic facilities; are responsible for the overall operation of the pool complex; develop a wide variety of comprehensive aquatic programs; and perform other related duties as required.

Examples of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Developing specialized comprehensive aquatic programs, including tiny tot, senior citizens, exercise and water sports activities;
  • Researching and anticipating community interest and needs, and planning and organizing programs in response;
  • Establishing program objectives and goals;
  • Recruting, training, and supervising instructors and lifeguards;
  • Evaluating programs through feedback and statistics;
  • Conducting feasibility studies and adjusting programs accordingly;
  • Developing and organizing special events, competitive swim programs, and other aquatic activities;
  • Assessing budgetary requirements and submitting recommendations for operating budget;
  • Recommending and enforcing departmental rules and regulations;
  • Developing standards, policies, and procedures for aquatic programs and facilities;
  • Operating a light motorized vehicle for various operational needs; and
  • Operating a Department van or mini bus for transportation of participants.

Special Work Requirements: May include working evenings, holidays, weekends, and serving as a Disaster Response Worker during emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen for employment.

Education Requirement

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited institution in recreation, physical education, education, or related field. Foreign credentials require evaluation and documentation.

Experience Requirement

One year of professional experience in planning and directing recreational activities, with substitution options for higher degrees.

License Requirements

Valid First Aid and CPR/AED certificates, among other certifications, are required and must be maintained.

Additional Notes

Possession of a valid driver's license and various certifications are required prior to employment and must be kept current.
