Other Conditions: This temporary, full-time, 11-month position is created specifically to support the Kaho 'iwai: Reclaiming Hawaiian Knowledge Sovereignty project. To begin approximately spring semester 2025, pending position clearance and/or availability of funds. The position is located at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and appointment is renewable annually for the duration of the grant, contingent upon availability of funds, program/operational needs, and satisfactory performance.

As an 11-month librarian faculty, this position is on duty throughout the year (except during periods of authorized leave), and earns vacation leave and sick leave.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Reviews and edits the student-generated descriptions and table of contents on bibliographic records for enhanced description.
2. Updates OCLC records with edited descriptions and table of contents.
3. Maintains and updates the policies, procedures, and workflows for enhancing the descriptions of bibliographic records.
4. Reviews and standardizes the Hawaiian language newspaper index metadata and prepares samples for index software development phases.
5. Develops, maintains, and updates policies, procedures, and workflows for Hawaiian language newspaper index metadata.
6. Co-leads the development of the Hawaiian language newspaper index with the software developers.
7. Supports the development of Hawaii Knowledge Organization System (HKOS) domains, term lists, authority records, and related metadata creation and maintenance.
8. Serves in a leading role on the HKOS Working Group, including facilitating group correspondence and meetings.
9. Serves as a project liaison with Hamilton Library's Hawaii Collection on the implementation of the HKOS within its indices and collections.
10. Supports the application and evaluation of the HKOS, including writing and reviewing instructions for terms and application, applying controlled vocabularies, and analyzing its application.
11. Assists in the design and evaluation of software, specifically the HKOS and the Nupepa database, to better represent Hawaiian language, culture, and perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree by the date of hire.
2. Ability and desire to interact with students and faculty, using excellent interpersonal, customer service and facilitation skills.
3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment with multicultural groups and individuals with diverse academic abilities, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, including library staff, administrators, students, faculty, and community.
4. Strong commitment to service excellence.
5. Familiarity with library search strategies and user needs in order to create a holistic user experience of the library.
6. Demonstrated ability to take initiative on projects and quickly learn new tools/skills.
7. Demonstrated knowledge of Native Hawaiian language, history, politics, practices and contemporary issues.
8. Familiarity with the use of controlled vocabularies.
9. Attention to detail and ability to interpret and apply standards.

Desired Qualifications

1. Demonstrated experience with cataloging or creating metadata, particularly in the area of subject analysis.
2. Familiarity with issues and best practices with enhanced and reparative description, Indigenous knowledge organization, and/or data sovereignty.
3. Demonstrated fluency in Olelo Hawaii.
4. Experience using MARC-based tools such as Alma and OCLC Connexion.
5. Familiarity with software development.
6. Experience in instruction and instructional writing.
