Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serves as Director of the Health Sciences Library at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
  2. Develops, with key stakeholder input, and leads the implementation of a strategic vision for health science library services aligned with the JABSOM mission, addressing the evolving needs of medical and health sciences education, research, patient care, and accreditation requirements (Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association).
  3. Serves as Chief Collection Development Officer, collaborating with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library and the Medical Libraries Consortium of Hawaii to manage resources, costs, and accessibility for all library users.
  4. Explores the integration of cutting-edge technologies to enhance library services, ensuring the library remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.
  5. Fosters collaborative relationships with team members and learners to enhance the impact of library services on education and research.
  6. Collaborates with academic departments to support faculty in utilizing library resources for teaching, research, and scholarship, including AI-driven resources.
  7. Manages all faculty and staff of the library.
  8. Serves as a member of the UH Library Council, providing leadership for the library system.
  9. Represents the Health Sciences Library in community and institutional engagements.
  10. Oversees and manages the library budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation to meet the needs of health programs.
  11. Partners with JABSOM to improve medical and health literacy among students, staff, and healthcare professionals.
  12. Performs other scholarly and administrative duties as assigned.

Librarian IV Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  2. A second Master's degree in a specialized subject area.
  3. Seven years of relevant experience or four years as a Librarian III.
  4. Ability to create, implement, and manage a strategic vision for the library.
  5. Experience managing library resources, including staffing and budgeting.
  6. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
  7. Experience with licensing electronic resources.

Librarian V Minimum Qualifications

In addition to Librarian IV qualifications:

  1. Twelve years of relevant experience or four years as a Librarian IV.
  2. Recognized reputation for excellence among professional colleagues outside the university.
  3. Proven ability to create, implement, and manage a library's strategic vision and goals.
  4. Experience managing library resources, staffing, and budgets.
  5. Effective relationship-building skills with diverse groups.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Proven leadership in managing an academic health sciences or university library.
  • Experience in health sciences collection development, especially electronic resources.
  • Experience providing reference, information services, and instruction.
  • Experience with grants and library management systems (e.g., Alma), databases, and information products.
  • Demonstrated culturally or literacy-relevant library services to underserved populations.
  • Knowledge of UH procurement policies.
  • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP).
