Position Summary
The Swim Coach is a team leader who motivates, teaches, and inspires adult swimmers (fitness, triathlete, competitive, and non-competitive) committed to improving their fitness through swimming. Responsibilities include enforcing Kroc Center Hawaii guidelines, pool and safety rules, and policies to maintain a safe environment and ensure member and guest satisfaction. The Swim Coach will embody the mission of The Salvation Army in their professional conduct and community representation.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED
- At least 1 year of coaching or managing a swim club or varsity team
Preferred Requirements
- Experience in swim lessons and water exercise instruction
- Knowledge of American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels and water safety courses
- Certifications: American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- USA Master or USA Coach Certification
Equivalent training and experience that provide the required skills will be accepted.
Essential Functions
- Create and implement programs for various swimming activities including competitive, fitness, stroke improvement, and triathlon training.
- Understand the Kroc Center Hawaii Aquatics program, including class levels and skills.
- Evaluate students and assign appropriate skill levels.
- Provide constructive feedback and maintain a positive learning environment.
- Prepare and organize instructional equipment, complete evaluations, and maintain confidentiality.
- Communicate regularly with participants and parents.
- Organize team activities and recognize distressed swimmers.
- Enforce all aquatic policies, rules, and safety regulations.
- Never leave students unattended and maintain a professional rapport with all.
- Maintain cleanliness of facilities.
- Attend staff and administrative meetings.
- Maintain punctuality and flexible work hours, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
Ability to stay in water at 80-90°F for hours, support swimmers, communicate loudly, and perform physical activities including running, swimming, paddling, lifting up to 75+ pounds, and working weekends, holidays, and evenings.
Work Environment
Outdoor conditions, exposure to sun, heat, uneven/slippery surfaces, and potential hazards. Travel for training or conferences may be required, including long-distance travel and overnight stays.
Equipment Needs
Kick boards, swim buoys, paddles, noodles, and related equipment.
Certificates & Licenses
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
- USA Master or USA Coach Certification
- First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Valid driver's license and insured transportation
Clearances
Must pass a criminal background check; convictions are considered on a case-by-case basis.
