POSITION: The Salvation Army Social Services Chaplain for Programs (SS Chaplain)

DEPARTMENT: DHQ Programs

SUPERVISOR: Divisional Social Services Director (DSSD)

STATUS: Non-Exempt / Full time - hourly

PAY: $21.64/hr

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or certificate from an accredited Bible-based Christian institution in theology, Bible, Christian studies, pastoral counseling, evangelism, Christian ministry, biblical or theological studies, religion, or social services/social ministry; or three years of experience in chaplaincy, pastoral care, Christian ministry, or social services within a Bible-based framework. Experience with local Christian faith-based Hawaii resources is preferred. Training or service as a Salvation Army officer, soldier, employee, chaplain, or adherent is a plus. Must have a clean driving record and complete the Decision Driving Safety Test. Ability to do fieldwork in various settings is required. Experience in disaster recovery and computer proficiency are preferred. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Job Summary

The SS Chaplain provides spiritual care and resources to clients, families, staff, and volunteers through Bible studies, worship, prayer, life skills classes, counseling, and community faith collaborations. The role involves connecting clients with Salvation Army or other places of worship, coordinating religious programming with various units, and ensuring adherence to policies and mission standards.

Responsibilities

  1. Prioritize and connect clients and staff with Salvation Army or their own faith communities.
  2. Complete onboarding and ongoing training aligned with Salvation Army programs.
  3. Maintain communication with leadership regarding spiritual care activities.
  4. Coordinate program activities, including communication, budgeting, and reporting.
  5. Encourage spiritual growth through worship services, Bible studies, celebrations, and educational materials.
  6. Ensure availability of religious literature and materials.
  7. Implement policies regarding religious services and pastoral care.
  8. Serve as liaison between program units and faith communities.
  9. Support participation in Salvation Army events and holidays.
  10. Participate in clinical team meetings and training.
  11. Report monthly activities and manage crises/emergencies following safety protocols.
  12. Attend staff meetings, provide devotional or chapel services, and contribute to community faith collaborations.
  13. Provide transportation and support for clients attending spiritual activities.
  14. Complete documentation and assessments in collaboration with clinical teams.
  15. Support staff with client information and referrals as needed.
  16. Undergo clinical training and provide orientation on chaplaincy services.
  17. Adhere to policies on client rights, confidentiality, and safety.
  18. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Valid driver's license
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Proficiency with WITS and WellSky platforms and general computer skills
  • Training for emergency generator use may be required
