Kamehameha Schools is searching for Kumu (Instructors) to support our Ho'omāka'ika'i Summer Program! This program hosts 5 week-long overnight sessions for rising 6th graders to support connecting with and exploring Hawaiian culture.

If you have a background with Hawaiian culture and music and passion for sharing your knowledge, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

We are seeking a specialized Kumu (Instructor) to teach our Papa Mele (song and dance course). The role involves using musical skills, such as playing an instrument, singing, and demonstrating hula motions to teach Hoʻomākaʻikaʻi mele and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi to students. Collaboration with program staff is essential to coordinate lesson plans that deepen students' cultural immersion in ʻike kupuna. Additionally, the instructor will guide students in preparing a final performance that combines vocal elements with hula movements, showcasing their learning and progress. We are also hiring for substitutes/on-call Kumu, and selected candidates may be offered such a position depending on availability and need.

In total, we are seeking three types of kumu:

  • Kumu with weekly assignments to a group of students
  • Papa Mele Kumu
  • Substitute/On-Call Kumu

Hire Dates: March 31 - July 19

  • Weekly Training: March 31 - June 7
  • Program Dates: June 8 - July 11
  • Closeout: July 12 - July 19

Shift Types:

Day Shift

  • Sunday: 11am-5pm
  • Monday - Thursday: 6am-3:30pm
  • Friday: 6:30am-5pm

Evening Shift

  • Sunday: 11am-8pm
  • Monday - Thursday: 12pm-8pm
  • Friday: 10am-5pm

Job Summary

Responsible for developing and delivering Hawaiian cultural lessons and activities including, but not limited to language, history, culture, place names, oli, music and hula. Conducts various forms of evaluation to ensure effectiveness of program. Provides guidance and counseling to students. Supervises and participates with students in all field trips and activities.

Essential Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Instruction

  • Develop, prepare, and instruct students in lessons and activities aligned with the program's KOA overview, including language, history, culture, place names, oli, music, and hula.

Operations

  • Follow Kamehameha Schools' policies and procedures relevant to the Enrichment Department. Support and supervise students on all field trips and assist with program Hô'ike preparations.

Students

  • Provide guidance and counseling to students.

Assessment

  • Administer program assessment tools, measure student growth and program effectiveness, and provide feedback on curriculum, lessons, and activities.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Elementary Education, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history.
  • Ability to develop culturally relevant activities and lessons.
  • Effective teaching and working with elementary, middle, and high school students.
  • Good human relations and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle conflicts involving staff, students, and parents.
  • Experience in group dynamics, organizational techniques, and team building.
  • Ability to chaperone, instruct, and supervise students during strenuous field activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working or conversational Hawaiian language skills.
  • Knowledge of culturally appropriate educational approaches.
  • Experience with project-based learning.
  • Driver's license and certified in first aid (desirable).
  • Knowledge of KS operations and programs (desirable).

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting, desk work, and light manipulation; occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 10 pounds; rare strenuous movements.

Working Conditions

  • Travel to various locations, including neighbor islands, may be required.
  • Work in office/school environments, with possible non-standard workplaces.
  • Work hours typically Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends as needed.
