Location: On-Site – Hakipu ʻ u, Kualoa, and Ka ʻ a ʻ awa, HI

Relocation Package: None

Schedule: Full-time; open availability, including weekends and holidays, is required. Fieldwork takes place in multiple ahupua ʻ a, and flexibility is required for changing priorities or weather conditions.

Position Summary

The Rangeland Technician plays a vital role in supporting Kualoa Ranch's cattle grazing operations and silvopasture program by maintaining healthy forage systems and managing native forestry trees within pasture environments. This position requires hands-on fieldwork across diverse terrain, including weed control, tree care, pasture establishment, fencing, and equipment maintenance. Working closely with the Stewardship and Livestock teams, the technician helps ensure the long-term productivity and ecological integrity of Kualoa's rangelands.

Key Responsibilities

Pasture & Forage Management

  • Conduct herbicide applications across pastures to control broadleaf weeds while maintaining desirable grass species.
  • Manually remove invasive or undesirable plants using hand tools and small engine equipment.
  • Sow and establish desirable forage in new or degraded pasture areas.
  • Maintain accurate records of weed control and seeding activities as directed.
  • Prepare sites and assist with the outplanting of native forestry species such as koa within pasture systems.
  • Construct and maintain small protective fences around individual trees.
  • Conduct regular maintenance on outplanted trees, including trimming, watering, and weeding.

Field Equipment Use & Maintenance

  • Safely operate and maintain small engine equipment such as weedwhackers and chainsaws.
  • Follow protocols for herbicide storage, transport, and use.
  • Maintain an organized and safe workspace at field sites and baseyards.

Cross-Departmental Support

  • Collaborate with Stewardship and Livestock teams on joint field projects as needed.
  • Assist in fencing, paddock maintenance, and rangeland restoration efforts.
  • Utilize GPS units and field maps to locate work sites and document tasks.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor labor in a variety of environmental conditions, including hot sun, wind, and rain.
  • Must be able to wear PPE for extended periods, including respirators and eye protection during herbicide applications.
  • Capable of hiking and working on uneven, rocky, or steep terrain while carrying tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, and use of hand and power tools required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience performing physical outdoor labor on a regular basis.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving abstract that meets company requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles on rough terrain.
  • Working knowledge of small engine equipment such as weedwhackers and chainsaws.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, including safe herbicide use, pasture plant ID, and GPS navigation.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and execute tasks independently or as part of a team.
  • Physical coordination and stamina to perform fieldwork in remote pasture areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with native Hawaiian plants and invasive species common to rangeland environments.
  • Experience in pasture management, fencing, or silvopasture systems.
  • Prior training in pesticide safety or natural resource fieldwork.
  • Comfort working around livestock and livestock-related infrastructure.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
