Job Description

Position Summary:
Care Hawaii is a behavioral health care organization seeking a compassionate and dependable Counselor to support the daily functions of CARE's provision of services. CARE Hawaii, Inc. contracts with multiple stakeholders to provide an array of services. The Counselor is a member of a multidisciplinary team, responsible for organizing, coordinating, and monitoring all contract operations under the direction of the Director. The primary duty of the Counselor is to develop, initiate, and implement treatment plans for consumers.

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: Counselors are State Certified Substance Abuse Counselors (CSAC) or hold an advanced degree in behavioral health services from a nationally accredited college or university with a minimum of twelve (12) semester credit hours in related fields such as Counseling, Criminal Justice, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Social Welfare, Sociology, or other closely related fields, OR a current Substance Abuse Counselor Certification.

Preferred Experience: Candidate with current CSAC, familiar with statewide WITS system. The equivalent of two (2) years full-time work experience providing direct behavioral health services to serious & persistently mentally ill (SPMI) consumers, with demonstrated working knowledge of cultural norms, values, and issues related to cultural diversity in Hawaii, and knowledge of Hawaii's health/human services system and community resources.

Minimum Experience: Counselor will be trained in treatment provision for individuals with substance abuse and co-occurring mental disorders, with at least 1.5 years of specialized experience working with individuals with mental illness, including developing and implementing treatment plans, monitoring progress, and evaluating client needs.

Required Certifications:

  • CPR and First Aid
  • TB (two-step upon hire and annually)
  • Background Check
  • CPI

Job Competencies:

Required Skills: Mature, reliable, responsible, with clear and empathetic communication skills, cultural sensitivity, knowledge of ethics, HIPAA standards, and problem-solving. Demonstrates sound judgment, good work ethic, and personal integrity.

Technical Skills: Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, fax, telephone, and chat functionalities.

Working Environment: Indoor/outdoor settings, may require travel, overtime, weekend, and holiday work. Exposure to infectious diseases and moderate to noisy environments is possible.

Physical Demands: Ability to sit/stand for long periods, use ergonomic practices, communicate effectively, and read printed materials. Must be able to respond to client needs effectively and manage stress.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Screening, intake, and orientation of clients
  • Assessment and development of treatment plans
  • Tracking and coordinating authorization for services
  • Providing counseling and crisis intervention
  • Referral to community resources
  • Collaborating with team members on treatment goals
  • Documenting client progress and maintaining charts
  • Attending team meetings and trainings
  • Performing additional duties as assigned
